Dame Maggie Smith<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>was a well-known, Oscar-winning actress with numerous film, TV, and theatre credits to her name. The London native married her fellow English actor Sir <\/strong>Robert Stephens <\/strong>on June 29, 1967, and they had two sons together,\u00a0Chris\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Toby<\/strong>.\u00a0The Harry Potter<\/em> franchise actress laid her wand to rest when she died on September 27, 2024. Her children released a statement that same day, announcing, \u201cShe leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother,\u201d according to the Associated Press<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

While Dame, who left a significant mark on the cinematic world, passed away, both sons have followed in their mother\u2019s footsteps and become successful actors in their own right.\u00a0Below we break down the careers and personal lives of Chris and Toby, from growing up in the shadow of their very famous mother to creating successful careers in the entertainment business.<\/span><\/p>\n

Born June 19, 1967 in London, England, Chris Larkin\u00a0<\/strong>is Maggie\u2019s eldest son. Following in his parents\u2019 acting footsteps, Chris created an illustrious film, television, and theater career for himself. After training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Chris went on to act in his first film in 1995,\u00a0Angels\u00a0 & Insects<\/em>. From there, he appeared in other films like 1996\u2019s\u00a0Jane Eyre<\/em>, 1999\u2019s\u00a0Tea with Mussolini<\/em>, and more, also starring in several TV series.<\/p>\n

In 2001, Chris played Charles Darwin in the PBS docuseries Evolution<\/em> and, in 2003, took on the role of Hermann G\u00f6ring for the Canadian mini series\u00a0Hitler: The Rise of<\/em> Evil<\/em>. He also appeared in the popular shows Doctor Who<\/em>,\u00a0Outlander<\/em><\/a>, and\u00a0Black Sails<\/em><\/a>, a popular STARZ series about pirates that starred his younger brother! More on that later.<\/p>\n

Some of Chris\u2019 theater credits include\u00a0Yes, Prime Minister<\/em>,\u00a0His Dark Materials<\/em>,\u00a0Noises Off<\/em>, and\u00a0The Lady From Dubuque<\/em><\/a>, in which his mother played the starring role.<\/p>\n

You may notice Chris has a different surname than his parents. That was a specific choice made by the actor, as he revealed to the London\u00a0Times\u00a0<\/em>in 2013 how he wanted to distance himself from the family name so as not to \u201ctrade on the family connection.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c[My father] never got the changing of the name,\u201d Chris told the outlet<\/a>. \u201cHe would go, \u2018Why don\u2019t you change it back?\u2019 But that was the choice I made. And I wouldn\u2019t have been able to live with myself if I had gone back on it. It would have been like admitting defeat\u2026 I\u2019ve always been a fiercely independent soul.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chris, who changed his surname in reverence to his favorite poet,\u00a0Phillip Larkin<\/strong>, added that there are \u201clots of people\u201d in show business who have gotten their big break because of their parents, but \u201cthe challenge is to sustain it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chris was married to\u00a0Suki Stephens\u00a0<\/strong>in 2005 and they have two children together.<\/p>\n

Like his brother\u00a0and\u00a0<\/em>his parents, Toby Stephens\u00a0<\/strong>got bitten by the acting bug at an early age. Born April 29, 1969 in London, Toby was educated at Aldro School and Seaford College before attending the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. From there, the actor got his start as Othello in the 1992 film Orlando<\/em>, going on to star in the leading roles in numerous television and stage projects, like\u00a0Coriolanus<\/em>,\u00a0A Streetcar Named Desire<\/em>, and\u00a0Hamlet<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Toby continued growing his acting career by taking on other roles on screen, like\u00a0Custer\u2019s Last Stand<\/em>, the BBC series\u00a0Robin Hood<\/em>, and\u00a0Strike Back<\/em>, heading back to the stage at different points as well as voicing characters like James Bond for a radio production of\u00a0Dr. No<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Toby perhaps got his biggest break when he starred as Captain James Flint in\u00a0the STARZ series\u00a0Black Sails<\/em>, a prequel to\u00a0Treasure Island\u00a0<\/em>set in the \u201cGolden Age of Piracy\u201d in the early 18th century. He was also cast as former Prime Minister\u00a0Tony Blair\u00a0<\/strong>in 2016\u2019s\u00a0The Journey\u00a0<\/em>and as John Robinson in the Netflix remake of the 1965 TV series Lost in Space<\/em><\/a>, which ran between 2018-2021.<\/p>\n

The London native married the New Zealand actress\u00a0Anna-Louise Plowman\u00a0<\/strong>in 2001 and the two share a son,\u00a0Eli<\/strong>, and two daughters,\u00a0Tallulah\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Kura<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On acting, Toby told the Associated Press<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>in 2015, \u201cPeople kinda go, \u2018Oh, you\u2019re an actor because your parents are actors,\u2019 and you kinda go, \u2018Well no \u2026 I\u2019m my own person.\u2019 I totally have my own career and I don\u2019t see why I have to sort of qualify that all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cMy mother\u2019s the same, she\u2019s like, \u2018Oh god, you\u2019ll be stuck with that all the time.\u2019\u00a0But at the same time, I\u2019m immensely proud of her. I adore her and I adore her work. I\u2019m staggered by it.\u201d<\/p>\n
