Dame\u00a0Maggie Smith<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>inspired so many people with her role as Professor McGonagall in the\u00a0Harry Potter<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>movies, but some fans may be surprised to learn that she battled breast cancer as she was working on the movies. The beloved British actress,<\/a> who died at 89<\/a> in September 2024, seemingly made a full recovery. Find out more about Maggie\u2019s battle with cancer.<\/p>\n Maggie revealed that she\u2019d been diagnosed with cancer in 2009 in an interview with The Daily Telegraph<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>While she didn\u2019t say much about her diagnosis, she did admit that after undergoing chemotherapy, she was anxious about returning to live theater performances. \u201cI\u2019m not sure I could go back to theatre work, although film work is more tiring,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m frightened to work in theatre now. I feel very uncertain. I haven\u2019t done it for a while.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The late actress admitted that discovering she had cancer in her 70s \u201cknocks you sideways.\u201d She revealed that she was frightened upon learning. \u201cIt kind of takes the wind out of your sails, and I don\u2019t know what the future holds, if anything. I don\u2019t think there\u2019s a lot of it, because of my age \u2014 there just isn\u2019t. It\u2019s all been. I\u2019ve no idea what there will be,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer among women, but it can appear in both sexes. There has been much support for breast cancer awareness, leading to tons of campaigns dedicated to early detection and treatment, per\u00a0The Mayo Clinic<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>Some symptoms include a lump in the breast, changes in appearance to the breast (including an inverted nipple), and peeling skin over the breast. Breast cancer can be inherited through genes, and other factors such as age, drinking alcohol, and more can increase the likelihood of being diagnosed with it. There are also preventative surgeries and medications for people with a high likelihood of breast cancer.<\/p>\n Maggie revealed that she\u2019d been diagnosed with breast cancer after discovering a lump in 2008. \u201cI had been feeling a little rum. I didn\u2019t think it was anything serious because years ago I felt a lump and it was benign,\u201d she said in the aforementioned interview. She also said that it took \u201clonger to recover.\u201d<\/p>\n Maggie revealed that she had been sick while filming\u00a0Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.\u00a0<\/em>She said that she was hairless and felt \u201chorribly sick\u201d from chemotherapy. At the time, she did vow to keep working through the subsequent two\u00a0Harry Potter\u00a0<\/em>films<\/a> that were coming up.<\/p>\n Despite \u201cstaggering through\u201d\u00a0Harry Potter,\u00a0<\/em>Maggie appeared to have improved over 15 years later. By 2009, it had been reported that she\u2019d made a full recovery. Even though Maggie slowed down in terms of the number of roles she\u2019d taken, the late actress kept working throughout the years. Shortly after the final installment in the Harry Potter\u00a0<\/em>saga, she also starred in\u00a0The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.\u00a0<\/em>She was also critically acclaimed for her role as Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey,\u00a0<\/em>and she reprised her part for the 2019 and 2022 movies.<\/a> Most recently, she starred in the 2023 film\u00a0The Miracle Club.<\/em><\/p>\n It\u2019s unclear how Maggie died.
