Mayor Eric Adams<\/strong><\/a>\u2018 indictment made headlines on Wednesday, September 25, when he released a recorded statement. While insisting on his innocence, the New York City native claimed he is a \u201ctarget\u201d and that the federal government\u2019s forthcoming charges against him are \u201cbased on lies.\u201d Not only do New Yorkers want to know why Adams is being indicted, but people across the nation is also wondering what the Democrat<\/a> did.<\/p>\n Adams\u2019 indictment is still sealed at the time of publication. However, he spoke out about the charges he was facing in an address from Gracie Mansion.<\/p>\n \u201cMy fellow New Yorkers, it is now my belief that the federal government intends to charge me with a crime,\u201d he said in a recorded statement. \u201cIf so, these charges are entirely false, based on lies, but they would not be surprising.\u201d<\/p>\n Adams continued by saying that he \u201calways knew that if [he] stood [his] ground\u201d that he would \u201cbe a target.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cA target I became,\u201d he added. \u201cFor months, leaks and rumors have been aimed at me in an attempt to undermine my credibility and paint me as guilty. Just last week, they searched the home of our new police commissioner, looking for documents from 20 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n The mayor then vowed to \u201cfight these injustices with every ounce of [his] strength and [his] spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIf I\u2019m charged, I know I\u2019m innocent,\u201d he claimed. \u201cI will request an immediate trial so New Yorkers can hear the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n If Adams is convicted of the imminent federal charge (or charges) he is facing, the mayor could receive a prison sentence. Additionally, he promised the public that he\u2019d \u201crequest an immediate trial,\u201d which would speed up the situation.<\/p>\n On Thursday, September 26, Adams\u2019 residence was raided by law enforcement. According to multiple outlets<\/a>, agents seized the mayor\u2019s phone from him, which his attorney, Alex Spiro, said was unnecessary.<\/p>\n \u201cThey send a dozen agents to pick up a phone when we would have happily turned it in,\u201d Spiro reportedly said in a statement that morning. \u201cFederal agents appeared this morning at Gracie Mansion in an effort to create a spectacle (again) and take [Adams\u2019] phone (again).
