Lyle<\/strong><\/a> and Erik Menendez<\/strong><\/a> continue to serve life sentences in prison for the brutal murders of their parents on August 20, 1989, when the brothers\u2014then 21 and 18\u2014shot and killed them in their family\u2019s Beverly Hills mansion.<\/p>\n

Now, 35 years later, the Menendez brothers<\/a> are the latest subjects of Ryan Murphy<\/strong><\/a> and Ian Brennan<\/strong>\u2018s Monster<\/em> anthology series. Titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story<\/em><\/a>, the series stars Nicholas Alexander Chavez<\/strong><\/a> and Cooper Koch<\/strong> <\/a>as Lyle and Erik, with Javier Bardem<\/strong><\/a> and Chlo\u00eb Sevigny<\/strong> <\/a>portraying their parents, Jose<\/strong> and Kitty Menendez.<\/strong> The first edition of the true-crime saga, which focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer<\/strong><\/a> and starred Evan Peters<\/strong><\/a> as the \u201cMilwaukee Cannibal,\u201d garnered 1 billion hours of views within its first 60 days on Netflix.<\/p>\n

The 10-episode season, streaming Sept. 19 on Netflix, intends to explore whether the Menendez brothers were cold-blooded killers seeking to inherit their family\u2019s fortune, as the prosecution argued, or victims of a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents, as the defense claimed and the brothers maintain to this day.<\/p>\n

Before diving into the series, here are five things to know about Lyle, now 56, and Erik, 53.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Lyle and Erik Menendez Had Promising Futures<\/h2>\n

At the time of their parents\u2019 murders on Aug. 20, 1989, Lyle was a student at Princeton, and Erik was an incoming freshman at UCLA. The brothers had grown up in Beverly Hills, enjoying a privileged life thanks to their wealthy parents\u2014Jose, a Hollywood executive, and Mary Louise \u201cKitty,\u201d a former beauty queen.<\/p>\n

Lyle and Erik Were Arrested Seven Months After Their Parents\u2019 Murders<\/h2>\n

After Jose and Kitty were found brutally shot to death<\/a> in their Beverly Hills mansion, Lyle and Erik spent money recklessly, burning through an estimated $700,000 of their parents\u2019 wealth on cars, jewelry, and even purchasing restaurants and cafes. But their eventual downfall occurred when Erik confessed to his psychiatrist, Jerome Oziel<\/strong>, who then shared the information with his mistress<\/a>, Judalon Smyth<\/strong>. Smyth informed the police, revealing that Erik had confessed to the murders in therapy and that there were audiotaped recordings of the confession. The brothers were subsequently arrested in March 1990, sparking a multi-year legal battle over the admissibility of Oziel\u2019s recordings.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never thought I believed in evil, but when I heard those boys speak, I did,\u201d Smyth told investigative journalist Dominic Dunne<\/strong> in 1990.<\/p>\n

The brothers claimed at trial that their father\u2014who was nearly decapitated by a point-blank blast from a 12-gauge shotgun\u2014was a violent pedophile. These allegations were backed by testimony from two of the brothers\u2019 cousins, Andy Cano<\/strong> and Diane Vander Molen<\/strong>, who said Lyle and Erik had confided in them about the sexual abuse when they were children. As for their mother\u2014who was shot 14 times\u2014the brothers said she was an alcoholic who enabled and encouraged her husband\u2019s abuse.<\/p>\n

Their first trial, which began in 1993, ended in a deadlocked jury. In the second trial, the judge limited testimony about the alleged abuse and barred the jury from considering manslaughter charges instead of murder. Both brothers were convicted on two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.<\/p>\n

\u201cErik and Lyle Menendez have been incarcerated for 34 years and six months, and I believe that they are in prison for killing their lifelong abusers,\u201d said Robert Rand<\/strong>, who has spent considerable time with the brothers since the crime and is the author of The Menendez Murders: The Shocking Untold Story of the Menendez Family and the Killings that Stunned the Nation<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Lyle and Erik Both Married While in Prison<\/h2>\n

Despite their brutal crime and life behind bars, there was no shortage of women interested in the Menendez brothers. Lyle married Anna Eriksson<\/strong> on July 2, 1996, but they divorced on April 1, 2001, after she discovered he was \u201ccheating\u201d on her with another woman through a pen pal relationship (as conjugal visits are not allowed). Lyle remarried in November 2003 to Rebecca Sneed<\/strong>, with whom he had been corresponding for nearly a decade. The ceremony took place in the visiting area of California\u2019s Mule Creek State Prison.<\/p>\n

Erik also found love, marrying Tammi Ruth Saccoman<\/strong> on June 12, 1999, at Folsom State Prison.<\/p>\n

Lyle and Erik Menendez Have Amassed a Huge TikTok Following<\/h2>\n

Nearly 35 years after murdering their parents, a huge number of teens are calling the brothers\u2019 sentence unfair and unjust<\/a>. The single account menendezz_brotherss<\/a> \u2014 which demands \u201cFree the menendez brothers!!!\u201d has over 530K likes and nealy 8K followers, while the account imirishhx<\/a>\u00a0 \u2014 which is devoted to the men, saying it is \u201ca case that needs to be heard\u201d \u2014\u00a0has 16.6K followers and <\/span>1.5M likes. In all, TikTok videos about the brothers\u2019 case have 130 million views\u2026and will likely have even more after the 20\/20<\/em> special airs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
