Anna Delvey<\/strong>, the real life con artist and subject of Netflix\u2019 Inventing Anna<\/em><\/a>, has taken over the Dancing With The Stars<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>ballroom<\/a>.\u00a0The 31-year-old closed the show with a cha-cha performance alongside her partner, new professional dancer Ezra Sosa<\/a><\/strong>, earning a total of 18 points for her first dance.\u00a0This comes after Anna\u2019s release from ICE custody in October 2022, following her March arrest for overstaying her visa. She had previously spent time in prison<\/a> for scamming $200,000 from New York\u2019s elite, paid a $10,000 bond, and is currently banned from social media.<\/p>\n

Anna\u2019s story was first told in the New York<\/em> article \u201cMaybe She Had So Much Money She Just Lost Track of It,\u201d written by Jessica Pressler<\/strong>, which was the basis for the Netflix show. Anna had rose through the Manhattan social hierarchy ranks with a series of scams, but her tricks were ultimately exposed. 1. Anna Delvey is not her real name.<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Anna\u2019s real name is actually Anna Sorokin. Anna claimed that her friends and associates knew her as Anna Delvey and that \u201cDelvey\u201d is her mother\u2019s maiden name, according to The New York Times<\/em><\/a>. However, her parents told New York<\/em><\/a>\u00a0that they did not recognize the last name \u201cDelvey.\u201d She began going by Anna Delvey after her internship at Purple<\/em> magazine.<\/p>\n

2. Anna pretended to be a German heiress.<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Anna became known as the \u201cSoho grifter\u201d and \u201cSoho scammer\u201d after she pretended to be a German heiress with a $67 million trust fund, prosecutors claimed<\/a>. She was actually a Russian immigrant. She deceived Manhattan\u2019s elite and defrauded hotels, restaurants, a private jet operator, and banks out of around $275,000 over the course of 10 months. She allegedly even convinced a bank employee to give her $100,000 she never intended to pay back. She sought to create an exclusive club called the Anna Delvey Foundation and attempted to get $20 million in loans.<\/p>\n

3. Anna went to prison.<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Anna was arrested in 2017 and convicted in May 2019 on 8 counts, including grand larceny, attempted grand larceny, and theft of services, according to ABC News<\/em>. She was sentenced to 4 to 12 years in prison, fined $24,000, and ordered to pay nearly $200,000 in restitution. She served almost 4 years and was released in February 2021 on good behavior.<\/p>\n

4. Anna is currently in ICE custody.<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n

After being released from prison, Anna was rearrested by ICE six weeks later because she overstayed her visa. She has been in custody ever since and is waiting to see if she\u2019ll be deported to Germany, according to Insider<\/em><\/a>. \u201cMy\u00a0visa overstay was unintentional and largely out of my control,\u201d she explained. \u201cI served my prison sentence, but I\u2019m appealing my criminal conviction to clear my name. I did not break a single one of New York state\u2019s or ICE\u2019s parole rules. Despite all that, I\u2019ve yet to be given a clear and fair path to compliance.\u201d<\/p>\n

5. Anna was paid by Netflix.<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Netflix paid Anna a whopping $320,000 for the rights to her life story, Insider<\/em><\/a> revealed. She used $199,000 of the money to pay restitution to the banks and paid another $24,000 to settle state fines. On top of the $223,000 she\u2019s already spent, Anna has also\u00a0paid $75,000 in attorney fees.<\/p>\n
