Baby Reindeer<\/em> created a ton of buzz among Netflix<\/a> subscribers. The Primetime Emmy Award-nominated miniseries was inspired by Richard Gadd\u2019<\/strong>s autobiographical one-person show of the same title, which follows his experience being stalked, harassed and sexually assaulted. Weeks after its premiere, Fiona Harvey <\/strong>came forward, claiming that she was the person who inspired<\/a> the character Martha Scott: the stalker of Gadd\u2019s character, Donny Dunn. Not only did she deny some of the claims made in the miniseries, but she has now threatened legal action against the creators of the show.<\/p>\n Keep reading to learn more about the series\u2019 true story and more.<\/p>\n Gadd created and starred in his one-man show and miniseries Baby Reindeer<\/em>, playing Donny Dunn. The writer and actor spoke with The Independent<\/em><\/a> about the real-life inspiration behind his theatrical show. During his interview, Gadd recalled a woman \u2014 whom he called Martha \u2014 meeting him at the pub where he worked. After giving her a free cup of tea, she obsessively contacted him over time: 41,071 emails, 350 voicemail hours, 744 tweets, 46 Facebook DMs and 106 pages of letters to be exact.<\/p>\n \u201cI certainly egged the situation on before I realized that it was as dangerous as it was,\u201d Gadd told the publication in October 2019. \u201cI behaved like a prick at times.\u201d<\/p>\n While admitting he initially flirted with the older woman, Gadd pointed out that his actions, which were shown through his character, could \u201cturn\u201d his audience \u201cagainst\u201d him,\u201d adding, \u201cAnd they\u2019re right to.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI can\u2019t emphasize enough how much of a victim she is in all this,\u201d he explained at the time. \u201cWhen we think of stalkers, we always think of films like Misery<\/em> and Fatal Attraction<\/em>, where the stalker is a monstrous figure in the night down an alleyway. But usually, it\u2019s a prior relationship or someone you know or a work colleague. Stalking and harassment is a form of mental illness. It would have been wrong to paint her as a monster, because she\u2019s unwell, and the system\u2019s failed her.\u201d<\/p>\n After attempting to contact police, Gadd was told he needed actual evidence against Martha. \u201cIt\u2019s not their fault \u2013 it\u2019s the lack of funding, the lack of training, the lack of understanding, the lack of support for the victims,\u201d Gadd said about law enforcement. \u201cEven the police have come out and admitted that their attitudes to harassment are wrong and flawed. But admitting it is one thing. It needs fundamental change.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe laws surrounding harassment and abuse are so stupid because they look for black and white, good and evil, and that\u2019s not how it works,\u201d Gadd further explained. \u201cI could intimidate you by turning up to your workplace every day and getting a coffee over the road and staring through the window at you. You might feel very uncomfortable about that. But unless you can prove that there\u2019s some sort of physical threat, he can do as he pleases. That\u2019s really jeopardizing your life. She accused Gadd of \u201cusing Baby Reindeer<\/em> to stalk me now.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m the victim. He\u2019s written a bloody show about me,\u201d she told the outlet, adding that she allegedly received \u201cdeath threats and abuse from Richard Gadd supporters.\u201d<\/p>\n While speaking about the series\u2019 character \u2014 who is played by actress Jessica Gunning<\/strong> \u2014 the woman said, \u201cShe sort of looks like me after I put on four stone during lockdown, but I\u2019m not actually unattractive.\u201d<\/p>\n The woman revealed her identity ahead of an interview with British TV personality\u00a0Piers Morgan<\/strong>. She revealed that her name is actually Fiona Harvey, and her interview aired on May 9, 2024. \u201cThe real-life Martha from Baby Reindeer<\/em> breaks cover and gives me her first TV interview about the smash hit Netflix show,\u201d Piers wrote in a tweet, announcing the interview. \u201cFiona Harvey wants to have her say & \u2018set the record straight.\u2019 Is she a psycho stalker?\u201d<\/p>\n During the interview, Fiona claimed that Richard\u2019s claims that she sent him countless messages was \u201csimply not true.\u201d She also revealed that she\u2019s been subjected to death threats after the show. \u201cI find it quite obscene. I find it horrifying, misogynistic,\u201d she told Piers. \u201cPeople [are] phoning me up. It\u2019s been absolutely horrendous. I wouldn\u2019t give credence to something like that, and it\u2019s not really my kind of drama.\u201d<\/p>\n The ending of the series sees Donny play a voicemail from Martha. In it, she explained that she called him \u201cbaby reindeer\u201d because of a stuffed animal she had growing up.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was the only good thing about my childhood,\u201d Martha explained in the voicemail. \u201cWell, you are the [spitting image] of that reindeer. The same nose. The same eyes. The same cute wee bum. It means so much to me. You mean so much to me.\u201d<\/p>\n Donny is moved to tears by Martha\u2019s voicemail as he sits in a bar alone.
