{"id":259136,"date":"2024-09-10T11:21:54","date_gmt":"2024-09-10T11:21:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/10\/fyre-fest-2-for-1-1-million-you-get-to-scuba-dive-with-founder-billy-mcfarland\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:11:25","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:11:25","slug":"fyre-fest-2-for-1-1-million-you-get-to-scuba-dive-with-founder-billy-mcfarland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/10\/fyre-fest-2-for-1-1-million-you-get-to-scuba-dive-with-founder-billy-mcfarland\/","title":{"rendered":"Fyre Fest 2: For $1.1 million you get to scuba dive with founder Billy McFarland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/GettyImages-1639650019-e1725964454604.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Billy McFarland, the convicted fraudster behind 2017\u2019s infamous Fyre Festival, says fans are already snapping up tickets\u2014ranging from $400 to $1.1 million\u2014for the event\u2019s second edition.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Despite the original festival\u2019s catastrophic failure, which spawned two documentaries and landed its founder in jail, McFarland has revealed that he hopes to gather 3,000 people for Fyre Fest II.<\/p>\n<p>The 32-year-old disgraced founder revealed yesterday where and when the festival will be taking place across his social media channels\u2014and already, he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/pyrtbilly\/status\/1833281882114412732\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/x.com\/pyrtbilly\/status\/1833281882114412732\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>, over 1,200 people have applied for tickets.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">10 hours in: 1,208 unique applications for over 5,000 tickets. fyre 2 will only hold 3,000 people<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Billy McFarland (@pyrtbilly) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pyrtbilly\/status\/1833281882114412732?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/twitter.com\/pyrtbilly\/status\/1833281882114412732?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener\">September 9, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Scheduled to run from April 25 to April 28 next year, Fyre Festival II will take place on a privately owned island off the coast of Mexico\u2014and despite only being seven months away, the festival has not yet booked any artists.<\/p>\n<p>Still, in an interview with <em>NBC News<\/em>, McFarland insisted that Fyre Festival\u2019s sequel won\u2019t be a repeat of its first act.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For starters, this time around, he claimed that he has hired a festival production company to \u201chandle the stages and the bathrooms and all the stuff that I clearly don\u2019t know how to do.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McFarland didn\u2019t name the production company, but in a separate interview with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/style\/fyre-festival-2-billy-mcfarland-70c76770?mod=hp_listc_pos1\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/style\/fyre-festival-2-billy-mcfarland-70c76770?mod=hp_listc_pos1\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Wall Street Journal, <\/em><\/a>he said that it has bought a 51% stake in the Fyre Festival\u2019s parent company, Fyre Media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Plus, in an interview with <em>The<\/em> <em>Today Show <\/em>he insisted that Fyre Festival II is \u201cnot going to be just music\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, for $1.1 million he said that fans can spend their time scuba diving with him while \u201cbouncing around to other islands\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another activity idea McFarland has for the festival is live fights on the beach. Although he hasn\u2019t booked any entertainers yet, he claimed that he\u2019s in talks with Karate Combat to set this up.<\/p>\n<p><em>Fortune<\/em> has contacted McFarland for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The infamous Fyre Festival fiasco<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The original Fyre Festival was pitched as a \u201cluxury musical festival\u201d on Pablo Escobar\u2019s former private island in the Bahamas and was backed by celebrities including Emily Ratajkowski, Kendall Jenner, and Bella Hadid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tickets ranged from $500 to $12,000, and the event promised luxury villas, chef-made meals, and a stellar lineup including Pusha T, Blink-182, Major Lazer, Disclosure, and some 30 other artists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p><iframe title=\"Announcing Fyre Festival\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mz5kY3RsmKo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In reality, the festival was set in a parking lot, with none of the celebrities mentioned in sight; meanwhile, guests were welcomed with tents, prepackaged sandwiches, and unsanitary conditions that included no running water.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To make matters worse, there weren\u2019t enough beds to go around, luggage had been \u201clost\u201d,\u00a0 there was no phone signal and festivalgoers were forced to fend for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The catastrophic realities of Fyre resulted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/gb\/title\/81035279\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/gb\/title\/81035279\" rel=\"noopener\">documentaries<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/hulu\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/hulu\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Hulu<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/netflix\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/netflix\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Netflix<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/04\/16\/988096650\/hundreds-of-fyre-festival-ticket-holders-poised-to-win-payout-in-class-action-su\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/04\/16\/988096650\/hundreds-of-fyre-festival-ticket-holders-poised-to-win-payout-in-class-action-su\" rel=\"noopener\">class action lawsuits<\/a>, and jail time for McFarland in 2017.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He was ordered to pay back the $26 million he took from his investors and spent four years behind bars before he was released on probation in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was totally guilty. I committed a crime. Obviously went to prison, and I deserved that prison sentence,\u201d McFarland told<em> NBC News<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it wasn\u2019t until the day after the festival was canceled and I had one of my early investors call me and basically say, \u2018We need to do this, this and this, or else you\u2019re going to be in the front page of <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> in handcuffs.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">McFarland\u2019s second act \u2018has to work\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The massive failure of McFarland\u2019s previous\u2014and borderline dangerous\u2014festival attempt may explain why so many people are interested in round two.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2023, the first drop of $499 presale tickets for Fyre Fest II <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/08\/23\/fyre-festival-2-billy-mcfarland-tickets-sold-out\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/08\/23\/fyre-festival-2-billy-mcfarland-tickets-sold-out\/?utm_source=search&amp;utm_medium=suggested_search&amp;utm_campaign=search_link_clicks\" rel=\"noopener\">sold out <\/a>within a day, even though its website at the time offered no lineup or location.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there\u2019s a large number of people who want to go to Fyre II because they\u2019re unsure of the outcome, and they would like to have a front-row seat no matter what happens,\u201d McFarland told <em>NBC News<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThankfully, we have good partners who will make sure they\u2019re safe and obviously make sure things work out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, McFarland knows that his second go at the infamously botched music festival \u201chas to work\u201d\u2014or his reputation risks being further damaged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be very hard to get other opportunities, whether that\u2019s a marketing job, a podcast appearance, a TV show or a relationship,\u201d McFarland told <em>WSJ<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are going to be hard-pressed to trust me if I put it all on the line and fail at it twice.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div
