The film follows the politician as he reflects on his childhood in Ohio. Vance?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-8\">While speaking with <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/09\/ron-howard-totonro-film-festival-eden-sydney-sweeney-viggo-mortensen-thirteen-lives-jd-vance-hillbilly-elegy-1236080950\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\"><em>Deadline<\/em><\/a> amid the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, Ron was asked about the scrutiny that the film is under as the presidential election unfolds.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-9\">\u201cWell, we didn\u2019t talk a lot of politics when we were making the movie because I was interested in his upbringing and that survival tale. That\u2019s what we mostly focused on,\u201d Ron told the outlet in a recent interview. \u201cHowever, based on the conversations that we had during that time, I just have to say I\u2019m very surprised and disappointed by much of the rhetoric that I\u2019m reading and hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-10\">The \u201crhetoric\u201d Ron referred to was J.D.\u2019s infamous comments during <a href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/celeb\/donald-trump\/\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\"><strong>Donald Trump<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s campaign. His most controversial remark came from a resurfaced 2021 television interview when he described certain Democrats as \u201cchildless cat ladies.\u201d He also said that the future \u201cof the Democrats is controlled by people without children,\u201d citing Vice President <a href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/tag\/kamala-harris\/\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\"><strong>Kamala Harris<\/strong><\/a> and U.S. Secretary of Transportation <a href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/feature\/who-is-pete-buttigieg-politician-3487637\/\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\"><strong>Pete Buttigieg<\/strong><\/a>. Pete currently shares two children with his husband, <strong>Chasten Buttigieg<\/strong>, and Kamala shares stepchildren Ella and Cole with husband <strong>Dough Emhoff<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-11\">During Ron\u2019s <em>Deadline<\/em> interview, the producer added that \u201cpeople do change\u201d and recalled the time he used to know J.D.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-12\">\u201cWhen we spoke around the time that I knew him, he was not involved in politics or claimed to be particularly interested,\u201d Ron said. \u201cSo, that was then. I think the important thing is to recognize what\u2019s going on today and to vote. And so that\u2019s my answer. It\u2019s not really about a movie made five or six years ago. It is, but we need to respond to what we\u2019re seeing, hearing, feeling now, and vote responsibly, whatever that is. We must participate.
