For the first time since her performance at the Olympics went viral, Australian B-girl Rachel \u201cRaygun\u201d Gunn<\/strong> sat down for an interview to discuss the overwhelming backlash she received online during the 2024 Summer Games.<\/p>\n \u201cIt is really sad to hear those criticisms, and I am very sorry for the backlash that the community has experienced,\u201d the 37-year-old told Australia 10 News<\/em><\/a> in the interview, which aired Wednesday. \u201cBut I can\u2019t control how people react.\u201d<\/p>\n In the first \u2014 and potentially only \u2014 appearance of Breaking at an Olympic Games, Raygun\u2019s performance, which she defended by stating, \u201cAll of my moves are original,\u201d baffled spectators as she failed to earn a single point. She lost 18-0 in each of her battles against three competitors: U.S.\u2019s Logan Edra<\/strong> (Logistx), Lithuania\u2019s Dominika Banevi\u010d<\/strong> (Nicka), and France\u2019s Sya Demb\u00e9l\u00e9<\/strong> (Syssy).<\/p>\n When asked if she genuinely thought she was the \u2018best female breaker in Australia,\u2019 Gunn \u2014 a breakdancing professor at Macquarie University in Sydney \u2014 responded with a shrug, \u201cWell, I think my record speaks to that.\u201d She pointed to her being the \u201ctop-ranked\u201d breaker in Australia in 2020, 2022, and 2023. \u201cThe record is there, but anything can happen in a battle.\u201d<\/p>\n Last month, an online petition gathered more than 50,000 signatures amid unfounded accusations that Gunn, who qualified for the Olympics by winning last year\u2019s Oceania Breaking Championships, had cheated her way into the Olympics by manipulating the selection process.<\/p>\n \u201cThat was really upsetting because it wasn\u2019t just people that didn\u2019t understand breaking and were just angry about my performance,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was people attacking our reputation and our integrity. And none of them were grounded in any kind of facts. People still don\u2019t believe the truth, but\u2026 I think that\u2019s just going to be part of our reality, unfortunately.\u201d<\/p>\n Gunn, who has yet to return to Australia, dismissed the accusations as \u201cconspiracy theories,\u201d calling them \u201cjust awful.\u201d<\/p>\n Gunn has previously addressed the criticism on social media, sharing an Instagram<\/a> post from the Australian breaking team quoting her: \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to be different.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cGo out there and represent yourself,\u201d Gunn was quoted as saying. \u201cYou never know where that\u2019s gonna take you.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cCreativity is really important to me. I go out there, and I show my artistry. Sometimes it speaks to the judges, and sometimes it doesn\u2019t. I do my thing, and it represents art.
