Sometimes, they\u2019re necessary. It\u2019s impressive that though email is older than the Internet itself, it remains the de facto form of modern communication in many industries. (The fact that my children pretend not to know how to use their email addresses leads me to believe that its days may be numbered.)<\/p>\n<p>When computer engineer Ray Tomlinson sent the first email (to himself) in 1971, he likely never envisioned what it would one day become. Today, companies use email as a hub for project management. There are endless integrations with IFTT, cloud storage, social media, multimedia, and more. It\u2019s also searchable, filterable, taggable, and otherwise almost endlessly customizable.<\/p>\n<p>But exactly how to make those modifications isn\u2019t always clear. It often involves third-party platforms that, at best, work, and at worst, don\u2019t work and end up unsupported and vaporware. Search queries &amp; operators you can use with Gmail<\/p>\n<p>You can filter your Gmail search results using words or symbols called <em>search operators<\/em>. You can also combine operators to filter your results even more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How To Use Gmail Search Terms And Operators<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While you can set up your Gmail mailbox to display the results of queries like those below, the simplest way to use Gmail search terms and operators is once you know the search terms (what Gmail calls \u2018search operators\u2019).<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gmail<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In the search box at the top, click Show search options\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"18\" alt=\"photos tune\" class=\"perfmatters-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/cD6YR_YvqXqNKxrWn2NAWkV6tjJtg8vfvqijKT1_9zVCrl2sAx9jROKhLqiHo2ZDYTE=w36\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"18\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/cD6YR_YvqXqNKxrWn2NAWkV6tjJtg8vfvqijKT1_9zVCrl2sAx9jROKhLqiHo2ZDYTE=w36\" alt=\"photos tune\"\/>\u00a0.<\/li>\n<li>Enter your search criteria. If you want to check that your search worked correctly,\u00a0click Search to see what emails appear.<\/li>\n<li>At the bottom of the search window, click\u00a0<strong>Create filter<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Choose what you\u2019d like the filter to do.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<strong>Create filter<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-use-a-particular-message-to-create-a-filter\">Use a particular message to create a filter<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open <a href=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/\">Gmail<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Check the checkbox next to the email you want.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Click More.<\/li>\n<li>Click Filter messages like these.<\/li>\n<li>Enter your filter criteria.<\/li>\n<li>Click Create filter.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-edit-or-delete-filters\">Edit or delete filters<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open <a href=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/\">Gmail<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>At the top right, click Settings\u2192See all settings.<\/li>\n<li>Click Filters and Blocked Addresses.<\/li>\n<li>Find the filter you\u2019d like to change.<\/li>\n<li>Click Edit or Delete to remove the filter. If you\u2019re editing the filter, click Continue when you\u2019re done editing.<\/li>\n<li>Click Update filter or OK.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-export-or-import-filters\">Export or import filters<\/h2>\n<p>If you have a backup of your filters, you can import them into Gmail or export them.<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open <a href=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/\">Gmail<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>At the top right, click Settings \u2192 See all settings.<\/li>\n<li>Click Filters and Blocked Addresses.<\/li>\n<li>Check the box next to the filter.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Only new messages will be affected when you create a filter to forward messages.
