Beetlejuice Beetlejuice<\/em> features the return of several original characters \u2014 except for two. During a new interview, director Tim Burton<\/strong><\/a> revealed the reason why Alec Baldwin<\/strong><\/a> and Geena Davis<\/strong> <\/a>didn\u2019t reprise their roles for the sequel.<\/p>\n \u201cI think the thing was for me I didn\u2019t want to just tick any boxes,\u201d Tim, 66, told PEOPLE<\/em><\/a> in an interview that was published on Wednesday, August 28. \u201cSo, even though they were such an amazing integral part of the first one, I was focusing on something else.\u201d<\/p>\n The filmmaker continued that the new movie \u2014 which premieres on Friday, September 6 \u2014 is simply in a different \u201ctime.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cA sequel like this, it really had to do with the time,\u201d Tim pointed out. \u201cThat was my hook into it, the three generations of mother, daughter, granddaughter. And that [would] be the nucleus of it. Jenna Ortega<\/strong><\/a> is introduced as Lydia\u2019s daughter, Astrid Deetz. Michael Keaton<\/strong><\/a> also returns as Betelgeuse.<\/p>\n In the 1988 movie, Geena 68, and Alec, 66, played ghosts Barbara and Adam Maitland, respectively. At the end of Beetlejuice<\/em>, they agreed with the Deetzs to peacefully co-exist in the same house.<\/p>\n Fans of the original comedy were hoping for a cameo from Alec and Geena, but the A League of Their Own<\/em> actress confirmed that she was not asked to play Barbara Maitland again. In April, Geena told Entertainment Tonight<\/em><\/a> her \u201ctheory\u201d on why the Maitlands aren\u2019t in the sequel.<\/p>\n \u201cNo, I\u2019m not. I\u2019m not in the remake,\u201d she noted. \u201cOh, you were expecting that I would be? Yeah, no, you know what? Because my theory is that ghosts don\u2019t age. Not that I have.\u201d<\/p>\n Geena also pointed out that her and Alec\u2019s characters \u201cwere stuck the way they looked when they died forever, so it\u2019s been a while, it\u2019s been a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n Although she\u2019s not in the upcoming film, Geena noted in her interview that she was planning on watching the trailer.<\/p>\n \u201cI heard the trailer came out and somebody said they were crying,\u201d she said, before adding, \u201cSo, I have to see the trailer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n
