But even though they may be wealthy, workers are often too busy at the office to enjoy it, 10 anonymous current and former employees told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-08-26\/what-s-it-like-working-at-nvidia-you-may-get-rich-but-work-remains-stressful?sref=2jPYL79S\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-08-26\/what-s-it-like-working-at-nvidia-you-may-get-rich-but-work-remains-stressful?sref=2jPYL79S\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\"><em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>. Still, few are willing to leave if it means putting their vested shares at stake.<\/p>\n<p>One former employee who worked in technical support for enterprise clients and left in May said he often worked seven days a week, and frequently ended his work day at 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. Other workers, especially those in the engineering department, worked even later, he added. At times, the pressure even led to yelling fights during meetings, the former employee said. In the marketing department, another former employee who left in 2022 said fighting and shouting was also common in the 30-plus-person meetings she attended seven to 10 times per day.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Nvidia declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the demanding work culture comes from longtime CEO Jensen Huang, who has previously acknowledged <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/04\/30\/nvidia-ceo-jensen-huang-demanding-perfectionist-say-staff\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/04\/30\/nvidia-ceo-jensen-huang-demanding-perfectionist-say-staff\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\" rel=\"noopener\">he\u2019s not easy to work for<\/a>. In an interview with <em>60 Minutes<\/em> in April, Huang said working at Nvidia shouldn\u2019t be easy, anyway. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want to do extraordinary things, it shouldn\u2019t be easy,\u201d he said at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet, despite the pressures of working at Nvidia, employees leave the company at a much lower rate than is common in the industry. In 2023, the company had a 2.7% turnover rate, compared to 17.7% in the semiconductor industry at large, according to Nvidia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/images.nvidia.com\/aem-dam\/Solutions\/documents\/FY2024-NVIDIA-Corporate-Sustainability-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/images.nvidia.com\/aem-dam\/Solutions\/documents\/FY2024-NVIDIA-Corporate-Sustainability-Report.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\">Sustainability Report<\/a> for fiscal year 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Part of why employees don\u2019t leave the company is the opportunity to work on the cutting edge of tech, for the leader of the AI chips industry. But another motivation is hanging on until stock grants vest, which at Nvidia typically happens over a four-year period. Those who leave sooner could miss out on a big payday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-datawrapper wp-block-embed-datawrapper\">\n<p><iframe class=\"\" aria-label=\"Interactive line chart\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-M7n9D\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"451\" loading=\"lazy\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/M7n9D\/1\/\" style=\"border:none\" title=\"NVIDIA stock price\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Nvidia\u2019s massive stock rally has already made its executives some of the wealthiest in the tech industry. With about <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/22\/nvidia-jensen-huang-stock-sale-succession-planning\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/22\/nvidia-jensen-huang-stock-sale-succession-planning\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\" rel=\"noopener\">3.5% ownership of the company<\/a>, Huang is the world\u2019s 12th-wealthiest person, with a net worth of $111 billion, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/?sref=2jPYL79S\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/?sref=2jPYL79S\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\"><em>Bloomberg Billionaires Index<\/em><\/a>. Nvidia\u2019s chief financial officer, Colette Kress\u2019s $757.8 million worth of stock put her above counterparts at <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/intel\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/intel\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\" rel=\"noopener\">Intel<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/advanced-micro-devices\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/advanced-micro-devices\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\" rel=\"noopener\">AMD<\/a>, whose holdings don\u2019t exceed $10 million, according to <em>Bloomberg<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Through Nvidia\u2019s employee stock purchase plan, employees can contribute up to 15% of their salary to buy company shares at a 15% discount. One mid-level employee who bought in for 18 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/firstadopter\/status\/1778536699221672052\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/twitter.com\/firstadopter\/status\/1778536699221672052\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\">reportedly<\/a> retired with shares worth $62 million, according to Barron\u2019s senior technology editor Tae Kim.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All that stock wealth makes for an unusual dynamic in the workplace, even among employees outside of the C-suite. A former engineering employee who left in June told <em>Bloomberg<\/em> that in 2023 and into this year it was common to hear talk about new vacation homes and see colleagues scrolling <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/zillow-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/zillow-group\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\" rel=\"noopener\">Zillow<\/a> at work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At Nvidia\u2019s Santa Clara, Calif. office, Porsches, Corvettes, and Lamborghinis line the parking lot.
