Mariah Carey<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s mother, Patricia<\/strong>, and sister, Alison<\/strong>, have died, the 55-year-old singer revealed. In a new statement obtained by PEOPLE<\/em><\/a> on Monday, August 26, Mariah revealed that she lost both family members on the same day.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy heart is broken that I\u2019ve lost my mother this past weekend,\u201d the Grammy Award winner told the outlet. \u201cSadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear how Mariah lost both her sister and mother last weekend. However, in her statement, she added that she feels \u201cblessed that [she]\u00a0was able to spend the last week with [her] mom before she passed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI appreciate everyone\u2019s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,\u201d Mariah concluded.<\/p>\n

Mariah\u2019s late mother was an opera singer and a vocal coach. Patricia raised her daughters, Mariah and Alison, and son Morgan<\/strong> in Huntington, New York. Patricia shared her children with ex-husband Alfred Roy Carey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The \u201cEmotions\u201d artist had a complicated relationship with her late mother. Mariah opened up about their tension in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey,\u00a0<\/em>calling their distant relationship a \u201cprickly rope\u201d of \u201cpride\u201d and \u201cpain.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment,\u201d Mariah wrote in one excerpt. \u201cA complicated love tethers my heart to my mother\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the book, Mariah pointed out that it was \u201cemotionally and physically safer for [her] not to have any contact\u201d with Patricia or Morgan for a while.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities,\u201d the \u201cFantasy\u201d singer added. \u201cIt\u2019s never been only black-and-white \u2014 it\u2019s been a whole rainbow of emotions.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the mother and daughter seemingly patched up their bond over the years. In 2010, they sang together on stage for ABC\u2019s holiday special.<\/p>\n

As for Alison, Mariah claimed in her 2020 memoir that they also had a tattered relationship.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do know that what she experienced damaged and derailed her girlhood,\u201d the pop star wrote. \u201cShe was fully aware when the family unit unraveled and our parents turned on each other; she absorbed the full pain of a family coming undone. \u2026\u00a0I was told she brought home good grades, got into good schools, and loved music too.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
