Republican vice presidential candidate\u00a0JD Vance<\/a>\u00a0says\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0would not support a national abortion ban if elected president and would veto such legislation if it landed on his desk.<\/p>\n \u201cI can absolutely commit that,\u201d Vance said when asked on NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press\u201d whether he could commit to Trump not imposing such a ban. \u201cDonald Trump\u2019s view is that we want the individual states and their individual cultures and their unique political sensibilities to make these decisions because we don\u2019t want to have a nonstop federal conflict over this issue.\u201d<\/p>\n The Ohio senator also insisted that Trump, the former president who is the Republican nominee this year, would veto such legislation if it were passed by Congress.<\/p>\n \u201cI mean, if you\u2019re not supporting it as the president of the United States, you fundamentally have to veto it,\u201d he said in an interview that aired Sunday.<\/p>\n Vance\u2019s comments come after Democrats spent night after night of their\u00a0national convention in Chicago last week<\/a>\u00a0assailing Trump for his role in appointing the Supreme Court Justices who overturned Roe v. Wade, ending the constitutional right to abortion in the United States and paving the way for bans and restrictions across Republican-led states.<\/p>\n But efforts to try to neutralize an issue that Democrats hope will galvanize voters this fall also risk alienating parts of Trump\u2019s base opposed to abortion rights.<\/p>\n \u201cGod have mercy on this nation if this is now the position of what was the Pro-Life Party,\u201d wrote Family Research Council president Tony Perkins in\u00a0a post Sunday linking to a story on Vance\u2019s comments<\/a>.<\/p>\n While Trump has repeatedly boasted about his role in overturning Roe, he has, in recent days, pushed back on Democrats\u2019 warnings that he will go even further to restrict access if he wins a second term.<\/p>\n \u201cMy Administration will be great for women and their reproductive rights,\u201d he wrote Friday on his Truth Social platform, appropriating language used by abortion rights activists and the left.<\/p>\n His comments drew a wave of\u00a0criticism from anti-abortion advocates<\/a>, including the editor of the conservative National Review, which published\u00a0an article titled<\/a>\u00a0\u201cTrump\u2019s Abandonment of Pro-Lifers Is Complete.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump repeated his claim hours later at an event in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m very strong on women\u2019s reproductive rights. The IVF (in vitro fertilization), very strong. I mean, we\u2019re leaders in it. And I think people are seeing that,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n Democrats have responded to Trump with deep skepticism.<\/p>\n \u201cAmerican women are not stupid and we are not going to trust the futures of our daughters and granddaughters to two men who have openly bragged about blocking access to abortion for women all across this country,\u201d said Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren told NBC.<\/p>\n Trump ally Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., brushed off a question asking how Trump would be \u201cgreat\u2019 on reproductive rights.<\/p>\n \u201cYou need to ask him about that. What I would say is that President Trump was a very good pro-life president,\u201d he told CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe pro-life community,\u201d Graham said,, \u201cis organized around the well-being of the child, giving the mother options other than an abortion.\u201d Graham said \u201cthat movement will continue after he\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
