For Ratcliffe, the answer appears to be living out each of his childhood fantasies.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ratcliffe\u2019s hobbies<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The petrochemicals billionaire has a quirky, eclectic mix of ventures, straddling his passions for sports, automobiles, fishing, and drinking.<\/p>\n<p>Ratcliffe was a regular in the Grenadier pub, nestled down a sidestreet in the affluent London neighborhood of Knightsbridge.<\/p>\n<p>It was over a pint in that pub that Ratcliffe decided to reignite the Land Rover Discovery, naming the soon-to-be-released football operations at the club.<\/p>\n<p>From his previous sports projects, such as his ownership of the hugely successful cycling team Ineos Grenadier and football club Nice and his professed lifetime support of the club, Ratcliffe pitched himself as the ideal man to help turn around Manchester United\u2019s fortunes.<\/p>\n<p>Ratcliffe has already overhauled Manchester United\u2019s footballing side, installing a new CEO, Omar Barrada, and poaching new sporting director Dan Ashworth from rivals Newcastle United.<\/p>\n<p>He has also quietly bought up 400,000 acres of land in Iceland, where he likes to go fishing.<\/p>\n<p>When asked by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/business-money\/energy\/article\/jim-ratcliffe-on-saving-manchester-united-and-buying-parts-of-iceland-pnkdzhjld#:~:text=Ratcliffe%2C%20the%20founder%20of%20the,the%201983%20film%20Local%20Hero.\" church?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the intensity of everyday life where everything is covered in concrete or tarmac and you\u2019re umbilically attached to your iPhone disappears very quickly in this environment,\u201d Ratcliffe told the publication. \u201cIt will be good for my longevity, I hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Legacy building<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Looking at Ratcliffe\u2019s investments and judging by his comments, it\u2019s easy to conclude his purchases are simply the expensive trappings of a billionaire designed to help him escape the intensities of running a major global company.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s obviously a part of it, says Liz Colfer, associate director and chartered financial planner at wealth management business Five Wealth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019ve been running the company for as long as he has, you\u2019ve kind of ticked that box to a certain extent. And then it\u2019s thinking about what what other things can you get yourself involved in, and what else you can do,\u201d Colfer told <em>Fortune<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019ve got that mindset, to a certain extent it\u2019s never satisfied. There\u2019s always something else.
