Treating wastewater with this method could help slow the spread of antibiotic resistance.<\/p>\n<p>Disease-causing bacteria can absorb resistance genes that damaged or dead bacteria have released into the environment. This makes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2418894-making-wastewater-less-acidic-could-help-the-ocean-capture-more-carbon\/\">wastewater<\/a> one of the largest environmental reservoirs for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2305266-antibiotic-resistance-killed-more-people-than-malaria-or-aids-in-2019\/\">antibiotic resistance<\/a> genes, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canr.msu.edu\/people\/james_m_tiedje\">James Tiedje<\/a> at Michigan State University.
