{"id":256282,"date":"2024-08-22T14:42:47","date_gmt":"2024-08-22T14:42:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/22\/companies-are-monitoring-employees-and-theyre-ok-with-it\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:11:55","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:11:55","slug":"companies-are-monitoring-employees-and-theyre-ok-with-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/22\/companies-are-monitoring-employees-and-theyre-ok-with-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Companies are monitoring employees and they&#8217;re OK with it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Boss-Looking-Over-Shoulder-GettyImages-1390307222.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Employers are increasingly listening in on their workers, and a surprising number of employees don\u2019t have a problem with it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>When asked whether they would voluntarily give their company access to work-related instant messages and email text data to help identify and address employee experience issues, 43% of respondents said \u201cprobably yes\u201d or \u201cdefinitely yes,\u201d according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qualtrics.com\/news\/research-as-ai-increases-in-the-workplace-employees-are-open-to-their-employers-listening\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.qualtrics.com\/news\/research-as-ai-increases-in-the-workplace-employees-are-open-to-their-employers-listening\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\">survey<\/a> of 1,000 office workers conducted by experience management company <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/qualtrics\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/qualtrics\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\" rel=\"noopener\">Qualtrics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The number of people who were OK with their company listening in on their work activity was significantly higher than what <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/02\/hr-chief-new-c-suite-power-player\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/02\/hr-chief-new-c-suite-power-player\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\" rel=\"noopener\">HR leaders<\/a> predicted, said the company\u2019s chief workplace psychologist Benjamin Granger. Yet, employees still draw the line at companies <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/03\/29\/companies-watching-remote-workers-wfh-camera-video\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/03\/29\/companies-watching-remote-workers-wfh-camera-video\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\" rel=\"noopener\">peering into their activities<\/a> outside of work, such as their social media, even if it\u2019s anonymous, he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re on a work device, and you\u2019re at work, they\u2019re more comfortable with that,\u201d Granger told <em>Fortune<\/em>. \u201cYou can see that clear line of falling off, like that comfort level falling off once you start to get to things outside of work.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-datawrapper wp-block-embed-datawrapper\">\n<p><iframe class=\"\" aria-label=\"Stacked Bars\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-lVjrc\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"227\" loading=\"lazy\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/lVjrc\/1\/\" style=\"border:none\" title=\"Likelihood of signing up for workplace message monitoring\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Granger said this kind of \u201cpassive listening,\u201d which uses anonymous data that can\u2019t be traced to one employee, is often a better tool for executives to identify worker problems than surveys. Instead of leaders posing specific questions on surveys that may not address all employee concerns, passive listening enabled by AI could help them <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/07\/04\/harvard-business-review-monitored-employees-at-work-more-likely-to-behave-badly\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/07\/04\/harvard-business-review-monitored-employees-at-work-more-likely-to-behave-badly\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\" rel=\"noopener\">discover issues<\/a> that they might not have been aware of, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/14\/employees-at-risk-burnout-disconnect-bosses-well-being\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/14\/employees-at-risk-burnout-disconnect-bosses-well-being\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\" rel=\"noopener\">burnout and disengagement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurveys are great, and leadership needs the opportunity to ask questions, but sometimes employees have ideas, have problems\u2014they see something going wrong with the customer that leadership doesn&#8217;t see, and they need an open line of communication,\u201d Granger said.<\/p>\n<p>The surprising tolerance for using AI to help parse work-related data stands in sharp contrast to public perception about the role of artificial intelligence in everyday life. A Pew Research survey from 2023 found that just over half of Americans were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2023\/12\/08\/striking-findings-from-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2023\/12\/08\/striking-findings-from-2023\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\">more concerned than excited<\/a> about the use of AI in daily life.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the idea of an employer listening in on work-related activity <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/07\/27\/remote-workers-hate-being-spied-on-less-productive\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/07\/27\/remote-workers-hate-being-spied-on-less-productive\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\" rel=\"noopener\">was still off-putting<\/a> to just under a third of the employees surveyed\u2014with the rest answering \u201cmaybe\u201d\u2014and Atlanta-based executive coach and entrepreneur Jay McDonald said a wrong move could harm a company\u2019s reputation and prevent them from attracting the best talent. Anything that <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/02\/06\/corporate-leaders-failing-to-collaborate-trust-crisis\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/02\/06\/corporate-leaders-failing-to-collaborate-trust-crisis\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 hoNHBb\" rel=\"noopener\">harms trust<\/a> between employers and employees could be a disaster, he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrust is the glue between an employee and a business and between a business and a customer, and if anything you&#8217;re doing on this monitoring, or spying, or AI, or technology, any of those avenues, erodes trust, then it erodes confidence, and ultimately it will kill your business,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid such a reputational hit, Qualtrics\u2019 Granger suggests companies start implementing \u201cpassive listening\u201d programs gradually with full transparency and permission from employees so they don\u2019t condemn the idea from the start.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf employees see value in it, they&#8217;re going to generally become more comfortable with it over time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-cy=\"subscriptionPlea\"><strong>Recommended Newsletter:<\/strong> CEO Daily provides key context for the news leaders need to know from across the world of business.
