Who \u201cthinks strategically\u201d and \u201ccommunicates persuasively\u201d? While recruiters may be tempted to pepper job postings with these keywords, which seemingly describe the ideal employee, a new study suggests such \u201crule-bender\u201d language is apt to attract <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/07\/23\/narcissistic-executives-risky-moves-manipulate-board-directors-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/07\/23\/narcissistic-executives-risky-moves-manipulate-board-directors-study\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">narcissistic <\/a>applicants.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p>What\u2019s more, this type of wording entices narcissists who are more likely to engage in fraudulent or unethical behavior\u2014particularly where accounting positions are concerned\u2014according to researchers at the universities of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhsmith.umd.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.rhsmith.umd.edu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">Maryland<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/accountancy.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/accountancy.olemiss.edu\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">Mississippi<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sc.edu\/study\/colleges_schools\/moore\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/sc.edu\/study\/colleges_schools\/moore\/index.php\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">South Carolina<\/a>. Their findings have been <a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4866862\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4866862\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">accepted for publication<\/a> by the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/pubsonline.informs.org\/journal\/mnsc\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/pubsonline.informs.org\/journal\/mnsc\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\"><em>Management Science<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven before a single job seeker has clicked \u2018Apply,\u2019 language contained in a job posting may be too seductive for narcissists to ignore, increasing the chances of attracting unethical applicants to the position,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhsmith.umd.edu\/directory\/nick-seybert\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.rhsmith.umd.edu\/directory\/nick-seybert\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">Nick Seybert, PhD<\/a>, an associate professor of accounting at UMD\u2019s Robert H. Smith School of Business, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhsmith.umd.edu\/research\/seductive-language-narcissists-job-postings\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.rhsmith.umd.edu\/research\/seductive-language-narcissists-job-postings\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Narcissists are <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/02\/08\/dark-personality-traits-narcissists-manipulators-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2023\/02\/08\/dark-personality-traits-narcissists-manipulators-in-the-workplace\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">no strangers to the workplace<\/a>. Previous research has shown they not only <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aom.org\/doi\/abs\/10.5465\/amj.2017.0218\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/journals.aom.org\/doi\/abs\/10.5465\/amj.2017.0218\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">hamper team performance<\/a> but also have a knack for <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/23\/ceo-narcissist-study-linkedin-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/23\/ceo-narcissist-study-linkedin-profile\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">landing leadership roles<\/a>. This latest study, the researchers note, may help explain why self-admiring applicants get hired in the first place; recruiters may unintentionally be using rule-bender rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p>In a series of experiments, Seybert and his colleagues gauged people\u2019s level of narcissism and assessed their attraction to rule-bender language. They used the following rule-bender versus rule-follower language in their research:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ambitious and self-reliant<\/strong> vs. Grounded and collaborative<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thinks outside the box<\/strong> vs. Thinks methodically<\/li>\n<li><strong>Results-oriented, establishes and strives for goals<\/strong> vs. Process-oriented, establishes and strengthens procedures<\/li>\n<li><strong>Develops creative and innovative solutions to problems<\/strong> vs. Relies on time-tested solutions to problems<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flexible and strategic mindset<\/strong> vs. Concrete and practical mindset<\/li>\n<li><strong>Communicates in a tactical and persuasive manner<\/strong> vs. Communicates in a straightforward and accurate manner<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWe show that narcissists are more attracted to rule-bender language in job postings both for general jobs and for <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/tag\/accounting\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/tag\/accounting\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">accounting positions<\/a>,\u201d Seybert said. \u201cWe then show that <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/tag\/recruiting\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/tag\/recruiting\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">professional recruiters<\/a> are more likely to include rule-bender language in job postings for more innovative and higher-growth companies, as well as for companies that would benefit from manipulating their earnings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seybert added that his team focused on accounting because \u201cit is an area where narcissists and rule-benders may have the most immediate negative impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is narcissistic personality disorder?<\/h2>\n<p>While some people throw around the term \u201cnarcissist\u201d to define anyone selfish, charismatic, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/section\/success\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/section\/success\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">successful<\/a>, narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/covid-19-mental-illness-vaccine-anxiety-depression-ptsd-addiction\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/covid-19-mental-illness-vaccine-anxiety-depression-ptsd-addiction\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">mental illness<\/a>. Self-esteem is a critical component of the disorder, but so is how the person treats others. <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/9742-narcissistic-personality-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/9742-narcissistic-personality-disorder\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">Cleveland Clinic<\/a> highlights these NPD traits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Arrogance<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Behaving in a way that\u2019s snobby or disdainful<\/li>\n<li>Patronizing behavior<\/li>\n<li>Talking down or acting condescendingly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Belief in superiority<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Believing they should associate only with those they see as worthy<\/li>\n<li>Thinking they\u2019re special or unique<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Entitlement<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Anger when people don\u2019t cater to or appease them<\/li>\n<li>Expecting favorable treatment (to an unreasonable degree)<\/li>\n<li>Inflated sense of self-worth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Frequent envy<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Belittling or diminishing the achievements of others<\/li>\n<li>Expecting envy from others<\/li>\n<li>Feeling envious of others, especially when others are successful<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Frequent fantasies about having or deserving:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Beauty<\/li>\n<li>Intelligence<\/li>\n<li>Love<\/li>\n<li>Power<\/li>\n<li>Self-fulfillment<\/li>\n<li>Success<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Grandiose sense of self-importance<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Bragging or exaggerating their achievements<\/li>\n<li>Overestimating their capabilities or holding themselves to unreasonably high standards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lack of empathy<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Not returning kindness or interest that others show<\/li>\n<li>Saying things that might hurt others<\/li>\n<li>Seeing the feelings, needs, or desires of others as a sign of weakness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Need for admiration<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Fishing for compliments<\/li>\n<li>Fragile self-esteem<\/li>\n<li>Frequent self-doubt, self-criticism, or emptiness<\/li>\n<li>Preoccupation with knowing what others think of them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Willingness to exploit others<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Consciously or unconsciously using others<\/li>\n<li>Deliberately taking advantage of others for selfish reasons<\/li>\n<li>Forming friendships or relationships with people who boost their self-esteem or status<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37200887\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37200887\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37200887\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">1 to 2% of people<\/a> in the U.S. have NPD, estimates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/news-room\/apa-blogs\/what-is-narcissistic-personality-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/news-room\/apa-blogs\/what-is-narcissistic-personality-disorder\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">American Psychiatric Association<\/a>. In addition, NPD commonly manifests alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/mental-health-wellness-paris-2024-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/mental-health-wellness-paris-2024-olympics\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">other mental illnesses<\/a> such as <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/ssri-antidepressants-depression-medication-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/article\/ssri-antidepressants-depression-medication-ai\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">depression<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2024\/04\/15\/women-pandemic-alcohol-consumption-liver-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/well\/2024\/04\/15\/women-pandemic-alcohol-consumption-liver-disease\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">substance abuse disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Those with NPD are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK556001\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK556001\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">unlikely to seek treatment on their own<\/a>, as they often don\u2019t think there\u2019s anything wrong with them.
