About 2,600 miles away is Australia, rich in natural resources and open space. Now, a billionaire tech founder wants to use some of Australia\u2019s unused land mass to give Singapore access to a massive solar farm.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p>On Wednesday, the Australian government <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/worlds-largest-solar-precinct-approved-australian-government-113012034\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/worlds-largest-solar-precinct-approved-australian-government-113012034\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">cleared the first phase<\/a> of SunCable\u2019s AAPowerlink project, which hopes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/sun-cable-invest-25-bln-indonesia-solar-power-project-ceo-2021-09-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/sun-cable-invest-25-bln-indonesia-solar-power-project-ceo-2021-09-23\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">ship energy<\/a> from a giant solar farm in Australia\u2019s north to Singapore, via a 2,600-mile underwater cable. To put that length in context, the $13.5 billion project will require a cable that would cover almost the full east-west length of the continental U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Tanya Plibersek, Australia\u2019s environment minister, said SunCable\u2019s project would meet growing demand for renewable energy, both domestically and internationally. \u201cIt will be the largest solar precinct in the world\u2014and heralds Australia as the world leader in green energy,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/australia-singapore-solar-sun-cable-22dc0b31f4105411bc837a724977a8be\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/australia-singapore-solar-sun-cable-22dc0b31f4105411bc837a724977a8be\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>SunCable hopes that the 12,000 hectare solar farm and battery storage facility will deliver up to 6 gigawatts of energy 24\/7 to Singapore and the Australian city of Darwin. <\/p>\n<p>The company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suncable.energy\/news\/suncable-receives-major-commonwealth-government-environmental-approval-for-flagship-project\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.suncable.energy\/news\/suncable-receives-major-commonwealth-government-environmental-approval-for-flagship-project\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">says<\/a> a final investment decision will come in 2027, and electricity supply will commence in the early 2030s.<\/p>\n<p>SunCable will still need approval from both Singapore and Indonesia to carry out the project.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A turnaround for SunCable<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Australia\u2019s approval, which SunCable called a \u201cvote of confidence,\u201d is a turnaround for the company.<\/p>\n<p>The project was first backed by two billionaires, iron-ore magnate Andrew Forrest and Atlassian cofounder Mike Cannon-Brookes. But the two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/finance\/business\/mining\/billionaires-mike-cannonbrookes-and-twiggy-forrest-at-centre-of-collapsed-project-sun-cable\/news-story\/0d94c9a14878849e224cd2f53c08d0fb\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/finance\/business\/mining\/billionaires-mike-cannonbrookes-and-twiggy-forrest-at-centre-of-collapsed-project-sun-cable\/news-story\/0d94c9a14878849e224cd2f53c08d0fb\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">disagreed<\/a> about the project\u2019s viability and future direction, and SunCable went into voluntary administration in January 2023. <\/p>\n<p>Cannon-Brookes beat Forrest for control of the company; Grok Ventures, Cannon-Brookes\u2019s private investment company, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/sep\/07\/sun-cable-mike-cannon-brookes-takes-charge-of-world-changing-solar-project\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/sep\/07\/sun-cable-mike-cannon-brookes-takes-charge-of-world-changing-solar-project\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">acquired<\/a> SunCable in September 2023. <\/p>\n<p>At the time, Cannon-Brookes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/sep\/07\/sun-cable-mike-cannon-brookes-takes-charge-of-world-changing-solar-project\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/sep\/07\/sun-cable-mike-cannon-brookes-takes-charge-of-world-changing-solar-project\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">called<\/a> SunCable a \u201cworld-changing project\u201d<strong> <\/strong>and argued that resource-rich Australia needed to end its reliance on coal. The tech billionaire is a climate change activist, an investor in renewable energy projects, and owner of a green philanthropic fund.<\/p>\n<p>Cannon-Brookes, through Grok Ventures, owns an 11.3% stake in AGL Energy, making him the top shareholder in Australia\u2019s largest energy company.
