But I love my country more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-5\">Referring to Harris\u2014who he called \u201cvice president soon-to-be-president Kamala Harris\u201d\u2014Biden said, \u201cHer story represents the best American story. She\u2019ll be a president our children can look up to. She\u2019ll be a president respected by world leaders. She will be a president we can all be proud of. She will be a historic president who puts her stamp on America\u2019s future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-6\">As he ceded the party\u2019s leadership to Harris, Biden recounted his Administration\u2019s accomplishments, explained why he ran for President in 2020 and took direct aim at former President <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-7\">Throughout his half-century-long career, the 81-year-old was elected to the Senate at just 29, ran for the Democratic nomination for President twice, joined <strong>Barack Obama<\/strong>\u2019s historic ticket as running mate in 2008\u2014serving two terms as vice president\u2014and was finally elected President in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe title=\"FULL SPEECH: Joe Biden\u2019s full speech at the DNC\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ehmgSOPVBZw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-8\">He attributed his decision to run against Trump in 2020 to the 78-year-old\u2019s 2017 comments, which appeared to speak favorably of neo-Nazis following the Charlottesville \u201cUnite the Right\u201d rally.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-9\">\u201cWe\u2019re in a battle for the very soul of America. I ran for president in 2020 because of what I saw in Charlottesville in August of 2017. Extremists coming out of the woods carrying torches, their veins bulging from their necks, carrying Nazi swastikas and chanting the same exact antisemitic bile that was heard in Germany in the early \u201930s,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-10\">\u201cWhen the president was asked what he thought had happened, Donald Trump said, and I quote, \u2018There are very fine people on both sides.\u2019 My God, that\u2019s what he said. That is what he said and what he meant. That\u2019s when I realized \u2026 I could not stay on the sidelines. So I ran,\u201d Biden continued.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-11\">\u201cAll of us carry a special obligation,\u201d Biden said, addressing not just Democrats but Americans of all political sides. \u201cWe saved democracy in 2020, and now we must save it again in 2024,\u201d he added, reminding people that \u201cDonald Trump says he will refuse to accept the election result if he loses again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-12\">Further in his speech, Biden highlighted his Administration\u2019s legislative wins, including bringing the nation back from the COVID-19 pandemic, making historic investments in infrastructure, creating millions of jobs, and lowering prescription drug prices. He added that Harris and her running mate, <strong>Tim Walz<\/strong>, \u201cunderstand that this nation must continue to be a place of possibilities\u2014not just for the few of us, but for all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-13\">Biden also reiterated his commitment to \u201crebuild the backbone of America, the middle class,\u201d and noted that the bills he passed \u201cdelivered more to red states than blue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-14\">\u201cAs your President, I\u2019ve been determined to keep America moving forward, not going back,\u201d Biden said. \u201cTo stand against hate and violence in all its forms. To be a nation where we not only live with but thrive on diversity, demonizing no one, leaving no one behind, and becoming a nation that we profess to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-15\">Addressing the elephant in the room, Biden assured the convention crowd that he harbors no ill will toward Democrats who publicly and privately urged him to withdraw from the 2024 race.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-16\">\u201cAnd all this talk about how I\u2019m angry with all those people who said I should step down\u2014that\u2019s not true,\u201d Biden said, as the crowd chanted, \u201cWe love Joe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-17\">\u201cI\u2019ve either been too young to be in the Senate because I wasn\u2019t 30 yet, or too old to stay as President.
