Vice President Kamala Harris<\/strong><\/a> laid out her economic plans for the United States, which she coined would create an \u201copportunity economy.\u201d During a speech in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Friday, August 16, the 59-year-old Democrat emphasized that she would put the middle class first if elected president in November.<\/p>\n \u201cI know what home ownership means. It\u2019s more than a financial transaction. It\u2019s so much more than that,\u201d Harris explained. \u201cIt\u2019s a symbol of the pride that comes with hard work. It\u2019s financial security. It represents what you will be able to do for your children.\u201d<\/p>\n While pointing out that home ownership is \u201cout of reach for far too many American families,\u201d Harris noted that as president, she plans to \u201cwork in partnership with industry to build the housing we need both to rent and to buy.\u201d<\/p>\n I grew up in a middle-class household. For most of my childhood, we were renters.<\/p>\n When I\u2019m elected President, I will make it a top priority to bring down costs, and increase economic security for all Americans.pic.twitter.com\/r5PZq1LJEc<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 Kamala Harris (@KamalaHarris) August 16, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Harris also highlighted her socioeconomic background growing up, noting that her family \u201cwere renters.\u201d As she recalled working at a McDonald\u2019s in the past, the former prosecutor acknowledged her former coworkers, who were raising families while maintaining multiple jobs.<\/p>\n \u201cThey worked second or third jobs to pay rent or buy food,\u201d Harris said, before pointing out, \u201cThat only gets harder when the cost of living goes up. \u2026\u00a0Look, the bills add up: food, rent, gas, back-to-school clothes, prescription medication. After all that, for many families, there\u2019s not much left at the end of the month.\u201d<\/p>\n My plan to lower costs and expand opportunity for working and middle-class Americans. pic.twitter.com\/MIW7Ujd9kS<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 Kamala Harris (@KamalaHarris) August 16, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Elsewhere in her speech, the Oakland, California, native claimed the current presidential election \u201cis about two very different visions for our nation.\u201d Harris then named her opponent, Republican candidate Donald Trump<\/strong><\/a>, accusing him of planning to \u201cdevastate the middle class, punish working people and make the cost of living go up for millions of Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI will address in greater detail my plans to build an opportunity economy, and today, I will focus on one element that\u2019s on the minds of many Americans as they pay their bills at the kitchen table or walk the aisles of a grocery store, and that is lowering the cost of living,\u201d Harris added.<\/p>\n Harris\u2019 presidential campaign kicked into high gear just hours after President Joe Biden<\/strong><\/a> dropped out of the race last month. Weeks leading up to his announcement, Democrats and celebrities urged the 81-year-old to step down from the race. Many cited his age as a concern.<\/p>\n As the race to the White House continues, Harris and Trump, 78, are scheduled for their highly anticipated debate on Thursday, September 10.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n
