Published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/u-s-is-investigating-meta-for-role-in-drug-sales-574944cb?mod=Searchresults_pos4&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/u-s-is-investigating-meta-for-role-in-drug-sales-574944cb?mod=Searchresults_pos4&amp;page=1\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">reports<\/a> this year revealed that federal prosecutors have been probing whether Meta has profited indirectly from drug sales on Instagram and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/facebook\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The letter came on the heels of a rare scene earlier this year, when CEO Mark Zuckerberg stood up in a Senate hearing regarding child safety on social-media platforms, turned around, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/01\/31\/mark-zuckerberg-apologizes-to-families-senate-hearing-child-safety\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/01\/31\/mark-zuckerberg-apologizes-to-families-senate-hearing-child-safety\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">apologized to a gallery of parents whose children had been victims of online abuse. Some of the children had\u00a0committed suicide<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a hearing before the U.S. Senate \u2026 you personally apologized to the parents of children who have died following their exposure to exploitation, harassment, and drugs online,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/walberg.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/walberg.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/Congressional%20Letter%20to%20Meta%20-%20Illicit%20Drug%20Advertising.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/walberg.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/walberg.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/Congressional%20Letter%20to%20Meta%20-%20Illicit%20Drug%20Advertising.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">the letter <\/a>states. \u201cDespite this and your company\u2019s own Community Standards, Meta approved ads throughout 2024 that displayed obvious drug sales, including \u2018packages of OxyContin and piles of unidentified, brightly colored pills,\u2019 as well as MDMA, ecstasy, cocaine, and others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The legislators include House minority whip Rep. Lori Trahan (D-Mass.), and Rep. Randy Weber (R-Texas), who is also vice chair of the House subcommittee on telecommunications and technology. They were outraged over the fact that, rather than user generated content such as listings on Facebook Marketplace, the drug ads appeared to be promoted by Meta itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is particularly egregious about this instance is that this was not user generated content on the dark web or on private social media pages,\u201d they wrote. \u201cBut rather they were advertisements approved and monetized by Meta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meta did not immediately respond to <em>Fortune<\/em>\u2019s request for comment, but in a statement to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/08\/15\/lawmakers-letter-to-meta-ceo-mark-zuckerberg-about-illicit-drug-ads.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/08\/15\/lawmakers-letter-to-meta-ceo-mark-zuckerberg-about-illicit-drug-ads.html\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\"><em>CNBC<\/em><\/a>, the company said their systems reject hundreds of thousands of ads for violating Meta\u2019s drug policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrug dealers are criminals who work across platforms and communities, which is why we work with law enforcement to help combat this activity,\u201d they said. \u201cWe continue to invest resources and further improve our enforcement on this kind of content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/u-s-is-investigating-meta-for-role-in-drug-sales-574944cb?mod=Searchresults_pos4&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/u-s-is-investigating-meta-for-role-in-drug-sales-574944cb?mod=Searchresults_pos4&amp;page=1\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\"><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a> reported in March that federal prosecutors were investigating whether Meta had facilitated or profited from the sale of illicit drugs on Instagram and Facebook. At the time, a spokesperson for the company told the <em>Journal<\/em> that Meta was proactively cooperating with law enforcement authorities to limit the sale and distribution of illegal products.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet just a few months later, in July, the <em>Journal<\/em> published another report showing that Meta\u2019s platforms were running \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/meta-cocaine-opioids-ads-dea8e0fc?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/meta-cocaine-opioids-ads-dea8e0fc?mod=article_inline\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">dozens of ads marketing illegal substances such as cocaine and prescription opioids<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the same day, the Tech Transparency Project, a watchdog group covering major technology companies, reported an investigation detailing over 450 ads running on Instagram and Facebook that were selling pharmaceutical and other drugs, including images of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.techtransparencyproject.org\/articles\/meta-allows-drug-ads-selling-everything-from-opioids-to-cocaine\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.techtransparencyproject.org\/articles\/meta-allows-drug-ads-selling-everything-from-opioids-to-cocaine\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">piles of pills and powders, or bricks of cocaine,<\/a>\u201d often directing users to send the sellers encrypted messages on WhatsApp or Telegram.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeta appears to have continued to shirk its social responsibility and defy its own community guidelines,\u201d lawmakers wrote. \u201cProtecting users online, especially children and teenagers, is one of our top priorities.
