According to the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2eb6316c-6bdb-4a84-b8b9-112e0c942b83\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Financial Times;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>Financial Times<\/em><\/a>, the Danish government will be nominating a different candidate as EU commissioner after Vestager&#8217;s political party didn&#8217;t do well in the previous election. Vestager is known for being one of Europe&#8217;s top antitrust authorities and has been been tough on big tech companies during her term. The market abuse cases she has filed over the years inspired the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/european-union-digital-markets-services-acts-131818075.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:creation of the Digital Markets Act;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">creation of the Digital Markets Act<\/a> (DMA), which is a regulation meant to ensure that large companies don&#8217;t abuse their market power.<\/p>\n<p>Apple, Google, Meta and other big players in the industry have had to implement changes to how they conduct business after the DMA came into force. Google, for instance, said it <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/google-just-outlined-exactly-how-its-changing-ahead-of-thursdays-dma-deadline-174518625.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:will start displaying;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">will start displaying<\/a> price comparison results in Search from external aggregators when looking up services, such as flights or hotels. It will be easier for Android users to change search engines, as well. Vestager also ruled way back in 2016 that Irish tax authorities had given Apple a &#8220;sweetheart deal&#8221; for over a decade and had ordered the company to pay Ireland \u20ac14.3 billion ($15.72 billion) in taxes. EU&#8217;s General Court <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/apple-ireland-tax-eu-092712520.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:overturned;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">overturned<\/a> her order in 2020, but the commission had appealed that decision.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission also fined Google <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2018-10-09-google-appeals-5-billion-eu-antitrust-fine.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u20ac4.3 billion;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">\u20ac4.3 billion<\/a> ($5 billion) for antitrust violations surrounding Android and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/google-loses-appeal-eu-antitrust-comparison-shopping-125544574.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:$2.8 billion;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">$2.8 billion<\/a> for favoring its own comparison shopping services over others in Search under her leadership.
