Sunflowers move in a way that helps their neighbours. The seemingly random motion of the plants\u2019 roots and shoots actually minimises shade cover in crowded environments, ensuring that all of them get enough light to grow.<\/p>\n

Scientists have known about this plant motion, known as circumnutation,<\/a>\u00a0for centuries, but its purpose has always been elusive. \u201cIn climbing plants, it\u2019s clear that it\u2019s a search process, searching for a new stick to twine on. But in other plants, it\u2019s not clear if it\u2019s a bug or a feature,\u201d says Yasmine Meroz\u2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
