In the aftermath of the judge\u2019s ruling, the Justice Department is exploring remedies that <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/14\/google-breakup-justice-department-antitrust-case\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/14\/google-breakup-justice-department-antitrust-case\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">could include breaking up the company<\/a>, <em>Bloomberg<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-08-13\/doj-considers-seeking-google-goog-breakup-after-major-antitrust-win?sref=2jPYL79S&amp;embedded-checkout=true\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-08-13\/doj-considers-seeking-google-goog-breakup-after-major-antitrust-win?sref=2jPYL79S&amp;embedded-checkout=true\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">reported<\/a>, citing people with knowledge of the deliberations. Google has said it will appeal the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>At the center of the 10-week-long trial was Google\u2019s search engine, whose dominance, paired with a successful ad business, made Google and its parent company Alphabet among the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/alphabet\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/alphabet\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">most valuable companies in the world<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although it\u2019s not the only company with a search engine, Google has become synonymous with searching the web. Data from web-traffic analysis company <a href=\"https:\/\/gs.statcounter.com\/search-engine-market-share\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/gs.statcounter.com\/search-engine-market-share\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">Statcounter<\/a> puts Google\u2019s search engine market share at about 91% worldwide as of July. And it has maintained about a 90% market share since 2009, according to Statcounter. Its next closest competitor was Microsoft\u2019s Bing, with just under 4% market share as of July.<\/p>\n<p>Although the company disputed the figure, the Justice Department also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/05\/technology\/google-antitrust-ruling.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/05\/technology\/google-antitrust-ruling.html\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">said<\/a> nearly 90% of web searches were made through Google.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-datawrapper wp-block-embed-datawrapper\">\n<p><iframe class=\"\" aria-label=\"Stacked Bars\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-R0Sd8\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"637\" loading=\"lazy\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/R0Sd8\/1\/\" style=\"border:none\" title=\"Worldwide market share of search\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Google did not immediately respond to <em>Fortune<\/em>\u2019s request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company maintains its top position over search in part by paying out billions of dollars to make Google the default search engine across devices. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/26\/technology\/google-apple-search-spotlight.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/10\/26\/technology\/google-apple-search-spotlight.html\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">paid Apple $18 billion<\/a> to keep Google as the default search engine on its devices in 2021, the <em>New York Times<\/em> reported. It also pays to be the default search engine on the Mozilla Firefox web browser and <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/4309219-google-paid-8-billion-to-make-its-apps-default-on-samsung-phones\/#:~:text=Google%20paid%20%248%20billion%20to%20make%20its%20apps%20default%20on%20Samsung%20phones,-by%20Lauren%20Irwin&amp;text=Google%20agreed%20to%20pay%20%248,presented%20by%20Epic%20Games%20Inc.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/4309219-google-paid-8-billion-to-make-its-apps-default-on-samsung-phones\/#:~:text=Google%20paid%20%248%20billion%20to%20make%20its%20apps%20default%20on%20Samsung%20phones,-by%20Lauren%20Irwin&amp;text=Google%20agreed%20to%20pay%20%248,presented%20by%20Epic%20Games%20Inc.\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">Samsung devices<\/a>. On top of those payments, Google has its own web browser, Google Chrome, and the Android mobile operating system, both of which make Google the default search engine across millions of devices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If Google were broken up, as the Justice Department is reportedly considering, that could mean spinning off its Android mobile operating system or its Google Chrome web browser, <em>Bloomberg<\/em> reported. The act of breaking up Google would be a warning for other big tech giants facing antitrust suits, including <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/amazon-com\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/amazon-com\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/apple\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/apple\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple<\/a>, and Meta. It would also be the most significant corporate dismantling since AT&amp;T <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historyfactory.com\/insights\/this-month-in-business-history-bell-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.historyfactory.com\/insights\/this-month-in-business-history-bell-system\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">was split up in the \u201880s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The judge who presided over the Google case scheduled a hearing on Sept. 6 to discuss next steps with Google and the Justice Department, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/13\/technology\/google-monopoly-antitrust-justice-department.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/13\/technology\/google-monopoly-antitrust-justice-department.html\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>. A spokesperson for the Justice Department said breaking up the company was not guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Justice Department is evaluating the court\u2019s decision and will assess the appropriate next steps consistent with the court&#8217;s direction and the applicable legal framework for antitrust remedies.
