The coffee chain <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/13\/starbucks-ceo-brian-niccol-chipotle\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/13\/starbucks-ceo-brian-niccol-chipotle\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> Tuesday the appointment of Brian Niccol, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/chipotle-mexican-grill\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/chipotle-mexican-grill\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">Chipotle Mexican Grill<\/a>, who will take the helm starting Sept. 9.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The news comes just 17 months after Starbucks hired Laxman Narasimhan to take the reins from founder (and returning CEO) Howard Schultz. While Narasimhan spent <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/11\/26\/starbucks-ceo-laxman-narasimhan-coffee-order\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/11\/26\/starbucks-ceo-laxman-narasimhan-coffee-order\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">six months<\/a> training alongside baristas to learn how to create the full drink menu, his legacy was marred by conflicts with <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/14\/starbucks-negotiating-unions-workers-good-news-for-america\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/03\/14\/starbucks-negotiating-unions-workers-good-news-for-america\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">unions<\/a>, plummeting <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/01\/starbucks-earnings-morning-commute-app-orders\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/01\/starbucks-earnings-morning-commute-app-orders\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">sales<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/12\/starbucks-shares-climb-after-another-activist-investor-targets-slumping-firm\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/12\/starbucks-shares-climb-after-another-activist-investor-targets-slumping-firm\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">activist investors<\/a>, and even his CEO predecessor. After what Narasimhan described as a \u201cdisappointing\u201d second-quarter performance at Starbucks, Schulz <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/06\/starbucks-ex-ceo-howard-schultz-chain-major-fix-biggest-sales-miss-years\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/06\/starbucks-ex-ceo-howard-schultz-chain-major-fix-biggest-sales-miss-years\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">blasted<\/a> the company on <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/linkedin\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/linkedin\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a>, arguing the chain needed to overhaul its strategy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt any company that misses badly, there must be contrition and renewed focus and discipline on the core,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7193044402255110144\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7193044402255110144\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cOwn the shortcoming without the slightest semblance of an excuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schulz seems more inclined to back his company\u2019s new CEO, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2024\/08\/13\/watch-cnbcs-full-interview-with-starbucks-chair-mellody-hobson.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2024\/08\/13\/watch-cnbcs-full-interview-with-starbucks-chair-mellody-hobson.html\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">telling<\/a> Mellody Hobson, the chain\u2019s sixth-largest shareholder, that the hire of Niccol, who also previously served as Taco Bell\u2019s CEO, was a \u201chome run.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Fortune<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/30\/chipotle-mexican-grill-ceo-brian-niccol-success-advice\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/30\/chipotle-mexican-grill-ceo-brian-niccol-success-advice\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">met<\/a> with Niccol in May at a New York City Chipotle restaurant to learn more about how the serial C-suite executive spends his day running a company that <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.chipotle.com\/2024-07-24-CHIPOTLE-ANNOUNCES-SECOND-QUARTER-2024-RESULTS\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/ir.chipotle.com\/2024-07-24-CHIPOTLE-ANNOUNCES-SECOND-QUARTER-2024-RESULTS\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">pulled in<\/a> nearly $3 billion in revenue last quarter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Like Narasimhan, Niccol said he also spent time training with staff at a Chipotle kitchen when he first joined to learn the tools of the trade\u2014most importantly, how to wrap the perfect burrito.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWrapping a burrito is an art; you need some repetitions to do it fast,\u201d he told <em>Fortune<\/em>, but admitted he\u2019s a \u201cvery slow burrito roller,\u201d and ripped a few too many tortillas during training.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou get a real appreciation for what it takes to get the restaurant ready, both from morning prep standpoint, and then how to handle a peak, and then also what it takes to close a restaurant,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Chipotle portion debate<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The fast-casual chain has recently come under fire from customers slamming its supposedly shrinking portion sizes on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the May interview with <em>Fortune<\/em>, Niccol <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/30\/chipotle-ceo-brian-niccol-portion-sizes-special-look\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/30\/chipotle-ceo-brian-niccol-portion-sizes-special-look\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> \u201cportions have not gotten smaller,\u201d and offered a tip for scoring a bigger bowl: Give workers a secret look. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/wells-fargo\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/wells-fargo\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">Wells Fargo<\/a> analyst Zachary Fadem and his team later decided to \u201cput the \u2018weight debate\u2019 to rest\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/28\/chipotle-bowl-size-consistency-wells-fargo-study\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/28\/chipotle-bowl-size-consistency-wells-fargo-study\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">comparing<\/a> the size of 75 burrito bowls, and found the orders to be wildly inconsistent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following the release of Chipotle\u2019s second-quarter earnings in July, Niccol addressed the portion debate, telling investors there was \u201cnever a directive to provide less to our customers,\u201d and committed to making portions more standard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenerous portion is a core brand equity of Chipotle,\u201d Niccol said on the earnings call. \u201cIt always has been, and it always will be.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\"\/>\n<p>Now, with nearly a decade of experience as CEO of <em>Fortune 500<\/em> companies under his belt, Niccol is ready for a new chapter with Starbucks. He told <em>Fortune<\/em> the secret to juggling his work-life balance is taking control of his calendar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomebody recommended this to me: if you say yes to a work activity or a personal activity, then that means yes,\u201d he told <em>Fortune<\/em>, adding, \u201cyou also have to say no to things.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The CEO, who spends his weekends reading, playing golf, or moonlighting as an \u201caverage photographer,\u201d gave <em>Fortune<\/em> an exclusive look at his daily routine, which kicks off bright and early at 5:45 a.m.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Burritos, meetings, and the key to work-life balance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>5:45 a.m.:<\/strong> Niccol immediately begins his morning getting up to speed on the news of the day, reading the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> and turning on CNBC\u2019s <em>Squawk Box<\/em> while enjoying his first cup of coffee. He estimates he consumes three or four cups per day.<\/p>\n<p>The chief executive prefers espresso, especially a good Americano: \u201cAlways hot, and if I can, I like to have a cookie with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>7 a.m.<\/strong>: Niccol readies himself for a workout, alternating between strength training, weight lifting, and a \u201crun-slash-walk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am 50, so I don\u2019t want to run too much,\u201d he jokes.<\/p>\n<p>Breakfast typically consists of a shake with fruit, oats, peanut butter, and protein powder, or Niccol will switch up the menu with eggs and sausage. Following his meal, Niccol drives his youngest daughter to school before heading to work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>8:30 a.m.:<\/strong> After a 15-minute commute through the scenic views of Newport Beach, Calif.,, Niccol arrives at Chipotle\u2019s headquarters. He begins his day checking in with his assistant for a brief run-down of meetings and objectives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His first hour is spent answering emails, setting the schedule for the week. Around 10 a.m., Niccol heads to the team\u2019s first staff meeting for a two-hour-long agenda in which his direct reports provide project updates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe come together to talk about their respective parts of the business and how it\u2019s impacting the overall performance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12 p.m.: <\/strong>At Chipotle HQ, lunch is a \u201chighlight of the day,\u201d Niccol said. Before you ask, \u201cof course we have Chipotle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The chief executive admits, however, he doesn\u2019t eat the grilled menu every day: \u201cIf I could, I would, but not every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His go-to order is a chicken bowl with white rice, fajita veggies, pico de gallo, and a little bit of cheese. His full order also includes a barbacoa quesadilla and chips and guacamole on the side.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s probably a little too much food for my age,\u201d he said. \u201cBut you know, it\u2019s hard to resist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 p.m.:<\/strong> Following lunch, Niccol falls right back into the daily grind, fielding phone calls, reading materials, and preparing for upcoming meetings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His team then assembles for a strategic initiatives meeting for another several-hours-long conversation to review key items they\u2019re working on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3:30 p.m.:<\/strong> The tail end of Niccol\u2019s day is dedicated to one-on-one meetings with company leaders before wrapping up around 5:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do try to end the day where you don\u2019t have any meetings or phone calls so that you can kind of just think through what happened throughout the day,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat do you think you want to talk about tomorrow? Or are we working on the right things? And are we talking about the right stuff?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Niccol dedicates 20 to 30 minutes to reflect on the work day and plan ahead for the next day\u2019s goals before heading home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>6:30 p.m.:<\/strong> Niccol helps prepare a meal for his family with his wife, Jennifer. Around 7 p.m., the family congregates to eat, but with their busy schedules, it\u2019s \u201cnot usually a sit-down dinner,\u201d Niccol said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kids complain about what they didn\u2019t particularly like that we made,\u201d he said. After dinner, Niccol and his wife walk their miniature golden Labradoodle, Lucky, and their routes often pass through Corona del Mar State Beach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually, the walk with the dog is about a 20-to-30-minute walk,\u201d he said \u201cI could go longer, but he doesn\u2019t want to walk as much anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>9 p.m.: <\/strong>Niccol and his family wind down by watching TV together. Their usual rotation includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/netflix\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/netflix\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">Netflix<\/a> show\u2013they recently finished <em>The Gentlemen<\/em>\u2014or ESPN\u2019s <em>SportsCenter<\/em>. Recently, they\u2019ve spent evenings watching his youngest daughter\u2019s favorite show: <em>Modern Family<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like I\u2019ve rewatched all of them,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re in, I think, season 10 or 11.
