{"id":253458,"date":"2024-08-12T10:58:41","date_gmt":"2024-08-12T10:58:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/12\/typical-ftse-100-ceo-pay-hits-record-high-of-4-2-million-but-still-trails-u-s-peers\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:12:33","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:12:33","slug":"typical-ftse-100-ceo-pay-hits-record-high-of-4-2-million-but-still-trails-u-s-peers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/12\/typical-ftse-100-ceo-pay-hits-record-high-of-4-2-million-but-still-trails-u-s-peers\/","title":{"rendered":"Typical FTSE 100 CEO pay hits record high of \u00a34.2 million, but still trails U.S. peers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/img-assets\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/GettyImages-1247540867-e1723459440109.jpg?w=2048\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whether FTSE 100 CEOs are compensated enough, especially relative to their transatlantic peers, has been an ongoing debate in the U.K. for several years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The London Stock Exchange\u2019s CEO Julia Hoggett has <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2023\/10\/05\/top-london-stock-exchange-lse-boss-julia-hoggett-uk-blame-not-attracting-executives-talent-lower-pay\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2023\/10\/05\/top-london-stock-exchange-lse-boss-julia-hoggett-uk-blame-not-attracting-executives-talent-lower-pay\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">weighed in<\/a> on this, as have individual CEOs and advocacies, with some arguing CEO compensation needs to increase while others believe it\u2019s already more than adequate compared to the average employee.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a new development, the median pay of CEOs at Britain\u2019s 100 biggest companies just climbed 2% to hit a record high of \u00a34.2 million ($5.4 million) in 2023 and more executives are being paid over \u00a310 million than ever before, according to a report by the High Pay Centre <a href=\"https:\/\/highpaycentre.org\/ftse-100-ceo-pay-reaches-new-high\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/highpaycentre.org\/ftse-100-ceo-pay-reaches-new-high\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">published Monday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Economic trends have favored the top City bosses, including a bounce-back in growth following the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>AstraZeneca\u2019s Pascal Soriot and Rolls Royce\u2019s Tufan Erginbilgic were among the highest-paid CEOs last year, taking \u00a316.85 million and \u00a313.61 million, respectively.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis may reflect an emerging trend where the largest FTSE 100 companies follow the lead US counterparts in paying their CEOs ever higher amounts, while smaller FTSE 100 companies continue to pay comparatively \u2018modest\u2019 sums,\u201d the report said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CEO pay consists of a few different components, such as base salary, bonus and long-term incentives.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transatlantic rivalry<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are prominent <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/04\/12\/executive-ceo-pay-gap-u-s-u-k-exxonmobil-chevron-chiefs-shell-bp\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/04\/12\/executive-ceo-pay-gap-u-s-u-k-exxonmobil-chevron-chiefs-shell-bp\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">examples of companies<\/a> in the U.K. and U.S. operating in the same industry and bringing in similar revenues, but with bosses paid vastly different amounts. Take London-based Shell CEO Wael Sawan, who made \u00a37.9 million ($10 million) in 2023, while Exxon Mobil\u2019s Darren Woods earned $37 million.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The divergence is evident in the data, as FTSE 100 CEO pay continues to trail that of its S&amp;P 500 peers. The median pay for the top 500 listed U.S. companies was <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/03\/sp-500-ceo-pay-jumped-16m-gains-workers-inflation-squeezes\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/03\/sp-500-ceo-pay-jumped-16m-gains-workers-inflation-squeezes\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">$16.3 million<\/a> in 2023\u2014up 12.6% from a year ago and three times higher than the U.K., <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/03\/sp-500-ceo-pay-jumped-16m-gains-workers-inflation-squeezes\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/03\/sp-500-ceo-pay-jumped-16m-gains-workers-inflation-squeezes\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">Equilar<\/a> figures revealed in June.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. has increasingly turned to offering compensation in the form of stock awards, which remain contingent on company performance and put less emphasis on one-off bonuses.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the S&amp;P 500 companies consistently outperform FTSE 100 members in revenue and market capitalization, this <a href=\"https:\/\/corpgov.law.harvard.edu\/2023\/07\/17\/u-s-ceo-compensation-advantage-grows-vs-u-k-peers\/#:~:text=The%20rise%20in%20LTIs%20and,S%26P%20500%20CEOs%20was%20LTIs.\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/corpgov.law.harvard.edu\/2023\/07\/17\/u-s-ceo-compensation-advantage-grows-vs-u-k-peers\/#:~:text=The%20rise%20in%20LTIs%20and,S%26P%20500%20CEOs%20was%20LTIs.\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">results in<\/a> a rapidly widening gap that the U.K. will have to bridge.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, many FTSE 100 companies have global operations and the ranking doesn\u2019t include some major U.K. employers because of private ownership or overseas listings.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A bigger pay-bump in the future?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>CEO pay can be a contentious topic. While it\u2019s generally optimistic for CEOs to see their pay swell, the percentage increase is still far behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2023\/08\/22\/ftse-100-ceo-pay-rise-2022\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2023\/08\/22\/ftse-100-ceo-pay-rise-2022\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">16% rise<\/a> seen last year as well as what <a href=\"https:\/\/insights.issgovernance.com\/posts\/rise-in-ceo-pay-at-u-s-large-cap-companies-returns-to-historical-norms\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/insights.issgovernance.com\/posts\/rise-in-ceo-pay-at-u-s-large-cap-companies-returns-to-historical-norms\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\">U.S. companies<\/a> are giving their leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those advocating for better pay among top management, such as LSE\u2019s Hoggett, argue that if the remuneration of U.K. bosses doesn\u2019t start to match U.S. peers, attracting experts and industry veterans will be more challenging. That, in turn, will hurt \u201cthe ability to create <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2023\/10\/05\/top-london-stock-exchange-lse-boss-julia-hoggett-uk-blame-not-attracting-executives-talent-lower-pay\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2023\/10\/05\/top-london-stock-exchange-lse-boss-julia-hoggett-uk-blame-not-attracting-executives-talent-lower-pay\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">globally consequential<\/a> companies,\u201d she said in a podcast last year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Recently, the subject of CEO pay has caused company stakeholders to spar over whether or not it\u2019s excessive. In 2023, a majority of Unilever <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/05\/09\/uk-ceos-executive-pay-shareholders-fairness-compensation\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/05\/09\/uk-ceos-executive-pay-shareholders-fairness-compensation\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">shareholders rejected<\/a> the compensation package of CEO Hein Schumacher, who was about to take the consumer company\u2019s helm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, a major AstraZeneca investor said Soriot was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/05\/09\/uk-ceos-executive-pay-shareholders-fairness-compensation\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/05\/09\/uk-ceos-executive-pay-shareholders-fairness-compensation\/\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ\" rel=\"noopener\">massively underpaid<\/a>\u201d given his contributions to the British pharma giant despite being among the best-paid European CEOs in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>The High Pay Centre report identifies a growing chasm between top-boss pay, which is currently 120 times that of the average employee. This is happening due to various reasons, including the weaker role of trade unions and the \u201ccult of the superstar CEO.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That creates further tensions \u201cas excessive spending on top earners by leading firms makes it harder to fund pay increases for the wider U.K. workforce,\u201d the think tank said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The tussle between the two forces could determine the future of CEOs and workers in Britain.
