The vulnerability spotted by researchers at <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/ioactive.com\/event\/def-con-talk-amd-sinkclose-universal-ring-2-privilege-escalation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:IOActive;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">IOActive<\/a> was revealed in a report from <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/amd-chip-sinkclose-flaw\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Wired;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><em>Wired<\/em><\/a> last week, and is said to affect <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/cybersecurity\/researchers-discover-potentially-catastrophic-exploit-present-in-amd-chips-for-decades-161541359.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:most AMD processors going back to 2006;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">most AMD processors going back to 2006<\/a>. While AMD\u2019s security team has been working to get some of these systems patched, <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/pc-components\/cpus\/amd-wont-patch-all-chips-affected-by-severe-data-theft-vulnerability-ryzen-1000-2000-and-3000-will-not-get-patched-among-others\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Tom\u2019s Hardware;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><em>Tom\u2019s Hardware<\/em><\/a> reports that the Ryzen 1000, 2000 and 3000 series along with the Threadripper 1000 and 2000 won\u2019t get any such updates.<\/p>\n<p>The company told <em>Tom\u2019s Hardware<\/em> that these are among \u201colder products that are outside our software support window.\u201d Newer models and all of AMD\u2019s embedded processors have reportedly already received or will be receiving the patch. The Sinkclose flaw is considered to be more of a risk for governments or other large entities than for the average user, and even then, taking advantage of it would require deep access to a particular system.
