Both Russia and Venezuela have blocked access to the encrypted messaging app Signal, <\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n The Russian news service <\/em><\/a> broke the news about the block on the Signal app in Russia. Russia\u2019s telecommunications watchdog Roskomnadzor restricted the app due to \u201cviolations of the requirements of the Russian legislation whose fulfillment is necessary to prevent the use of the messenger for terrorist and extremist purposes,\u201d according to the Russian report.<\/p>\n The cybersecurity tracker <\/a> on Friday that Russia has restricted access to Signal \u201con most internet providers.\u201d NetBlocks also noted the app \u201cremains usable with \u2018censorship circumvention\u2019 enabled\u201d in Signal\u2019s settings echoing <\/a> to users who\u2019ve been blocked from their messages in both regions .<\/p>\n The blocking of Signal in Venezuela occurred in the long shadow of the country\u2019s disputed presidential election results from the end of July. Venezuela\u2019s electoral authority declared President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro the winner without publishing any evidence of his win, sparking protests from detractors and supporters of Maduro\u2019s opponent Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez, according to the <\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n Both regions have been cutting off access to other similar social media apps possibly as a way to quiet dissenting voices. <\/a> earlier today for a period of 10 days claiming that the company\u2019s owner Elon Musk was inciting hatred and \u201cviolated\u201d his social network\u2019s rules. <\/em><\/a> also reported a \u201cmass YouTube outage\u201d in Russia on Thursday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
