David Lynch<\/strong>, co-creator of the series Twin Peaks<\/em> and director of Mulholland Drive<\/em> and Blue Velvet<\/em>, announced on Monday that he had been diagnosed with emphysema but emphasized that he would not retire.<\/p>\n

The 78-year-old visionary revealed in the September issue of Sight & Sound magazine that he has been diagnosed with the lung disease and can\u2019t leave the house anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve gotten emphysema from smoking for so long, and so I\u2019m homebound whether I like it or not,\u201d he told the magazine. \u201cI can\u2019t go out. And I can only walk a short distance before I\u2019m out of oxygen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yes, I have emphysema from\u00a0my many years of smoking. I have to say that I enjoyed smoking very much, and I do love tobacco \u2013 the smell of it, lighting cigarettes on fire, smoking them \u2013 but there is a price to pay for this enjoyment, and the price for me is\u2026<\/p>\n

According to the Cleveland Clinic<\/a>, emphysema is a lung disease and a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) primarily caused by smoking, with symptoms including \u201cshortness of breath, coughing, and fatigue.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a post via X<\/a>, Lynch echoed his comments from the initial reveal, adding that \u201cthere is a price to pay\u201d for his smoking habit, which he called an \u201cenjoyment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to say that I enjoyed smoking very much, and I do love tobacco\u2014the smell of it, lighting cigarettes on fire, smoking them,\u201d he described, clarifying that he has since quit. \u201cI have now quit smoking for over two years. Recently I had many tests, and the good news is that I am in excellent shape except for emphysema. I am filled with happiness, and I will never retire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lynch said any future directing he does would need to be from his house. Although he said he \u201cwouldn\u2019t like that so much,\u201d he added that he would try directing remotely \u201cif it comes to it.\u201d<\/p>\n
