Philippines gymnast Carlos Yulo made history as the country\u2019s first-ever male Olympic gold medalist when he won the top prize for his floor routine on Aug. 3\u2014and then again, when he became the country\u2019s first two-time gold medalist after winning on the vault less than 24 hours later.<\/p>\n
But the 24-year-old gymnast won\u2019t just be walking away from this summer\u2019s Olympic Games with a pair of medals\u2014he also won a fully furnished $550,000 condo.<\/p>\n
The Olympian was originally set to win a two-bedroom condo <\/a>worth $415,000 (24,000,000 Philippine pesos) in the heart of Taguig City, in metropolitan Manila, thanks to the property developer Megaworld Corp.<\/p>\n However in light of Yulo\u2019s double success, the company has just \u201cupgraded<\/a>\u201d its promised reward to a three bedroom $553,345 (32 million Philippine pesos) condo.<\/p>\n The fully furnished flat resides inside the company\u2019s 50-hectare McKinley Hill township, which it says is home to \u201cseveral world-class athletes, including members of the Philippine national teams for basketball and football.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThis makes it a perfect home for Filipino champions who live a life of passion and excellence through and through,\u201d Megaworld president Lourdes T. Gutierrez-Alfonso said in the statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n The company will also gift Yulo $51,900 (3 million Philippine pesos) in cash.<\/p>\n As if two gold medals and a condo aren\u2019t enough, Yulo is being showered with even more gifts from proud Filipino businesses and leaders.<\/p>\n In addition to the $173,000 (10 million Philippine pesos) given by the government to each gold medalists, The House of Representatives is gifting the champion $103,700 (6 million Philippine pesos).<\/p>\n Meanwhile, the country\u2019s capital city Manila, where Yulo was born and raised, is preparing a \u201chero\u2019s welcome\u201d for him.<\/p>\n \u201cThe grandest welcome will greet him and all our Paris Olympians. When we meet him, we will present Carlos Yulo cash incentives, awards and symbols of the eternal gratitude of the proud capital city of the Philippines,\u201d the city\u2019s mayor, Honey Lacuna, told the BBC<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n Also awaiting Yulo are lifetime supplies of\u00a0free buffets, ramen<\/a>, and chicken inasal, a grilled chicken dish, by various chain restaurants.<\/p>\n One doctor has even pledged to provide free colonoscopies<\/a> and gastroenterology consultations to the nation\u2019s hero for life\u2014but only after he turns 45.<\/p>\n The gymnast has also been offered two free caf\u00e9 franchises from Don Macchiatos<\/a>, a coffee and lemon drink business, as well as various brand ambassadorship opportunities.<\/p>\n Even those who share the same name as Yulo are getting the red carpet treatment, with some eateries<\/a> offering free meals or drinks to anyone named Carlos, Caloy (his nickname) or Edriel (his middle name).<\/p>\n Perhaps unsurprisingly, Yulo isn\u2019t the first olympic champion to be on the receiving end of some wacky prizes.<\/a><\/p>\n When Indonesian badminton athletes Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu returned home from Tokyo in 2021, the popular Indonesian meatball restaurant chain Baso Aci Abang gave the nation\u2019s only gold medalists their own shopfront.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, the island of Sulawesi\u2014where Rahayu hails from\u2014promised her five cows and a house.\u00a0<\/p>\n In South Korea\u2014where all able-bodied men must enlist in the armed forces for 18 months before age 28\u2014medalists win exemption from military service.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Russian Olympic medalists have been gifted with racehorses, as well as premium cars, among other incentives.
