He called out Microsoft and other AI search engines like Anthropic and Perplexity for not paying for the information they take from Reddit, some of which have already been blocked from Huffman\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>Reddit has deals in places with companies like <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/7\/31\/24210565\/reddit-microsoft-anthropic-perplexity-pay-ai-search\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Google;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Google<\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/openai-strikes-deal-to-put-reddit-posts-in-chatgpt-224133045.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:OpenAI;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">OpenAI<\/a> to receive compensation for using its posts and information. <em>The Verge <\/em>paraphrased Huffman as saying Microsoft was one of several companies &#8220;refusing to negotiate,&#8221; but a Reddit spokesperson disputed this characterization. The spokesperson told Engadget that Reddit and Microsoft did attempt to negotiate a solution, but didn&#8217;t reach a deal they both agreed on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout these agreements, we don\u2019t have any say or knowledge of how our data is displayed and what it\u2019s used for, which has put us in a position now of blocking folks who haven\u2019t been willing to come to terms with how we\u2019d like our data to be used or not used,\u201d Huffman told <em>The Verge\u2019s <\/em>deputy editor Alex Heath.<\/p>\n<p>Huffman says if Microsoft and other AI search sites continue to use Reddit\u2019s information without proper compensation, they\u2019ll have to be blocked. He doesn\u2019t want to do that because it\u2019s \u201ca real pain in the ass to block these companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reddit has started <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/search-engines-that-dont-pay-up-cant-index-reddit-content-172949170.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:cracking down on search engines;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">cracking down on search engines<\/a> that expunge information from its various forms and communities. The website vowed to block unauthorized data scraping in June by updating its Robots Exclusion Protocol (robots.txt) and it\u2019s already prevented Bing from accessing data from Reddit, a fact confirmed by <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JordiRib1\/status\/1817979250823319736\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Microsoft\u2019s head of search Jordi Ribas on X;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Microsoft\u2019s head of search Jordi Ribas on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, a source confirmed to Engadget&#8217;s<em>\u00a0<\/em>Will Shanklin that Microsoft\u2019s refusal to work with Reddit\u2019s terms of service led to the blocking of Bing. A spokesperson from Reddit also said, \u201cAnyone accessing Reddit content must abide by our policies, including those in place to protect redditors. We are selective about who we work with and trust with large-scale access to Reddit content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update, July 31, 7:40PM ET: <\/strong>This story was updated to include more detail on the talks between Reddit and Microsoft over scraping.
