It comes hours after an Israeli strike targeted a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/30\/world\/middleeast\/fuad-shukr-hezbollah-israel-strike.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/30\/world\/middleeast\/fuad-shukr-hezbollah-israel-strike.html\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">Hezbollah commander<\/a>, another Iran-backed terror group believed behind the recent bombing of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/a-dark-day-for-majdal-shams-druze-community-grieves-after-hezbollah-strike-kills-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/a-dark-day-for-majdal-shams-druze-community-grieves-after-hezbollah-strike-kills-12\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">Druze children<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/why-the-golan-heights-is-a-middle-east-flashpoint-13186189\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/why-the-golan-heights-is-a-middle-east-flashpoint-13186189\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">Golan Heights<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Brent crude, the global benchmark, rallied as Khamenei threatened Israel with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/khamenei_ir\/status\/1818569675946491948\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/x.com\/khamenei_ir\/status\/1818569675946491948\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">severe punishment<\/a>\u201d after violating its borders: \u201cIt is our duty to take revenge\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Futures prices for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/futures\/UK\/BRN1\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/futures\/UK\/BRN1\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">front-month contract<\/a>\u00a0on London\u2019s ICE exchange surged nearly 3% to $80.81 per barrel, shaking off recent bearish sentiment over weak demand from China, the world\u2019s second-largest economy. Should rising petroleum prices cause gasoline to spike once more, inflationary pressures could delay rate cuts from the U.S. Fed and conceivably become an election issue in November.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the oil navigating the Strait is pumped by Aramco, the $1.8 trillion exchange-listed energy giant controlled by Saudi Arabia. Iran is Saudi\u2019s chief adversary in the region and the pair only recently restored diplomatic relations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The kingdom could be dragged into the conflict, a key risk since it is the only OPEC+ country that can easily respond to supply shocks.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A few thoughts on Haniyeh&#8217;s assassination. <\/p>\n<p>No confirmation yet if it was Israel that killed Haniyeh and if it was through an airstrike. In a pinch, however, it can quickly pump out 12 million barrels of its light, sweet crude prized for its low level of impurities.<\/p>\n<p>The next OPEC+ meeting won\u2019t be held until\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opec.org\/opec_web\/en\/press_room\/7337.htm\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.opec.org\/opec_web\/en\/press_room\/7337.htm\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">early December<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whether the Gaza war will still be raging by then, more than a full year after the attack of October 7th, is unclear now that the political leader of Hamas has been assassinated.
