The issues, Google explained, were due to bugs in its autocomplete feature. But Musk\u2019s tweet, which was viewed more than 118 million times, nonetheless forced the search giant to publicly explain one of its most basic features.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past few days, some people on X have posted claims that Search is \u2018censoring\u2019 or \u2018banning\u2019 particular terms,\u201d Google wrote in a series of posts on X. \u201cThat\u2019s not happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though Google didn\u2019t name Musk specifically, over the weekend the X owner said that \u201c Google has a search ban on President Donald Trump.\u201d The claim appeared to be based on a <a data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1817765530255659127\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:single screenshot;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> of a search that showed Google suggested \u201cpresident donald duck\u201d and \u201cpresident donald regan\u201d when \u201cpresident donald\u201d was typed into the search box.<\/p>\n<p>The same day, Donald Trump Jr. shared a <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DonaldJTrumpJr\/status\/1817581431243395237\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:similar image;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> that showed no autocomplete results relating to Donald Trump for the search \u201cassassination attempt on.\u201d Both Trump Jr. and Musk accused the company of \u201celection interference.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet-wrapper\" data-embed-anchor=\"42acfbc6-709c-5379-b278-ea7b3ee4c3f4\">\n<blockquote placeholder=\"\" data-theme=\"light\" class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p>Over the past few days, some people on X have posted claims that Search is \u201ccensoring\u201d or \u201cbanning\u201d particular terms. It added that \u201cbuilt-in protections related to political violence\u201d had prevented autocomplete from suggesting Trump-related searches and that \u201cthose systems were out of date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Likewise, the company <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Google_Comms\/status\/1818367625803813127\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:said;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><\/a> that the strange suggestions for \u201cpresident donald\u201d were due to a \u201dbug that spanned the political spectrum.\u201d It also affected searches related to former President Barack Obama and other figures.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the company explained that articles about Kamala Harris appearing in search results for Donald Trump is not due to a shadowy conspiracy, but because the two\u2014 both of whom are actively campaigning for president \u2014 are often mentioned in the same news stories.
