As the 20-year-old stepped back to connect on a backhand shot, the linesperson ruled that the previous shot was out as she made contact with the ball.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-5\">The chair umpire <strong>Jaume Campistol<\/strong> awarded the point to Vekic, which Gauff found extremely displeasing. A five-minute argument ensued, with Gauff pleading her case and becoming very emotional.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-6\">\u201cI felt that he called it before I hit, and I don\u2019t think the ref disagreed,\u201d Gauff said. \u201cI think he just thought it didn\u2019t affect my swing, which I felt like it did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-7\">\u201cThere have been multiple times this year where that\u2019s happened to me \u2014 where I felt like I always have to be an advocate for myself on the court,\u201d Gauff added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Coco Gauff was left in tears after getting into an argument with the chair umpire over a ruling during her loss to Donna Vekic of Croatia<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-8\">\u201cIt always happens to me on this court. I have to advocate for myself every time.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Q9bWE2F33N\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\">pic.twitter.com\/Q9bWE2F33N<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-9\">\u2014 moyoafrika (@moyoafrika) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/moyoafrika\/status\/1818305998139826665?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\">July 30, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-11\">Gauff is one of the biggest stars at the 2024 Paris Games, who was seeded No. 2 at the Olympics in singles and was the <a href=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/2024\/07\/25\/coco-gauff-named-flag-bearer-for-paris-olympics\/\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\">female flag bearer<\/a> for the United States during the opening ceremony on Friday.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-12\">She easily won her first two singles matches, dropping a total of just five games. But her first Olympic singles tournament ended with a performance that was hardly her best on the hottest day of the Summer Games so far, with the heat rising above 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius).<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-13\">Gauff led 4-1 and was a point from moving ahead 5-1 and serving for the opening set. But she didn\u2019t close the deal, then wasted a couple of set points at 6-4 in the ensuing tiebreaker. Vekic surged to the end of that set, then maintained her level in the second.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-14\">\u201cI feel like in tennis, we should have a VAR (Video Assistant Referee) system because these points are big deals. Usually, afterwards, they apologize, so it\u2019s kind of frustrating when the sorry doesn\u2019t help you once the match is over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-15\">The dispute with the umpire in the second set, Gauff later explained, didn\u2019t alter the result of the match.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-16\">\u201cDonna played well,\u201d said Gauff. \u201cShe\u2019s been playing well throughout Wimbledon \u2018til now, so I knew it would be a tough match. I think I had a lot of chances in the first, and I felt like if I could clinch that set, it might have helped me with the momentum of the second.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-17\">\u201cI\u2019m not going to sit here and say one point affected the result today,\u201d Gauff acknowledged, \u201cbecause I was already on the losing side of things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-18\">Gauff\u2019s Olympic campaign will continue with <strong>Taylor Fritz<\/strong>, who beat Britain\u2019s <strong>Jack Draper<\/strong> in the singles earlier. The duo will play in the mixed doubles later today, fourth on Simonne-Mathieu.
