Soon, Perplexity will start sharing revenue with some publishers as part of an advertising platform it plans to launch around the end of September, the company announced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative, known as the Perplexity Publishers\u2019 Program, comes less than two months after the San Francisco-based startup backed by investors like Jeff Bezos and NVIDIA, and valued at $3 billion, came under fire from <a data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/amazon-investigating-perplexity-ai-after-accusations-it-scrapes-websites-without-consent-133003374.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Forbes;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>Forbes<\/em><\/a>, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ai-companies-are-reportedly-still-scraping-websites-despite-protocols-meant-to-block-them-132308524.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Wired;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>Wired<\/em><\/a>, and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/conde-nast-has-reportedly-accused-ai-search-startup-perplexity-of-plagiarism-191639677.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Cond\u00e9 Nast;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Cond\u00e9 Nast<\/a> for allegedly scraping content without permission and ignoring robots.txt, a type of file that websites use to block page-crawling bots.<\/p>\n<p>Perplexity\u2019s initial partners include <em>TIME<\/em>, <em>Fortune<\/em>, <em>The Texas Tribune<\/em>, <em>Der Spiegel<\/em> and Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com. It\u2019s not clear exactly how much revenue Perplexity will share with publishers. Dmitry Shevelenko, the company\u2019s chief business officer, declined to reveal numbers but told Engadget that it would be a \u201cmeaningful double-digit percentage shared back with the publishers that contributed source input to the answer.&#8221; He also said that the partnership would extend across multiple years without specifying how many. What this wasn\u2019t, Shevelenko insisted repeatedly, was a response to the critical press coverage in the last few months. \u201cWe\u2019ve been talking to publishers since January,\u201d he claimed. \u201cNo aspect of this program is reactive to these recent accusations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For months, publishers around the world have <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ai-companies-are-reportedly-still-scraping-websites-despite-protocols-meant-to-block-them-132308524.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:been concerned;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">been concerned<\/a> about the potential of AI-powered search engines and chatbots to decimate traffic by simply <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/who-makes-money-when-ai-reads-the-internet-for-us-200246690.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:sucking up their content;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">sucking up their content<\/a> and using it to provide people with answers directly instead of having to actually visit their websites. Google has followed suit too \u2014 the company <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/google-search-will-now-show-ai-generated-answers-to-millions-by-default-174512845.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:now sources;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">now sources<\/a> answers from search results and displays AI-generated versions at the top of the page. But so far, it doesn\u2019t compensate publishers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Our revenue share] is certainly a lot more than Google\u2019s revenue share with publishers, which is zero,\u201d Shevelenko said. \u201cThe idea here is that we\u2019re making a long-term commitment. If we\u2019re successful, publishers will also be able to generate this ancillary revenue stream.\u201d Perplexity, he pointed out, was the first AI-powered search engine to include citations to sources when it launched in August 2022, although the company <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/06\/12\/2024\/perplexity-was-planning-revenue-sharing-deals-with-publishers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reportedly redesigned;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reportedly redesigned<\/a> its user interface to show them more prominently after being called out by <em>Forbes<\/em> in June.<\/p>\n<p>AI companies like OpenAI have struck deals with major publishers including <em>TIME<\/em>, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/openai-will-reportedly-pay-250-million-to-put-news-corps-journalism-in-chatgpt-214615249.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:News Corp;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>News Corp<\/em><\/a>, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/the-atlantic-and-vox-media-made-their-own-deal-with-the-ai-devil-161017636.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Vox;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>Vox<\/em><\/a>, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/openai-will-pay-to-train-its-models-on-business-insider-and-politico-articles-200327559.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Axel Springer;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>Axel Springer<\/em><\/a>, the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/openai-will-train-its-ai-models-on-the-financial-times-journalism-173249177.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Financial Times;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em>Financial Times<\/em><\/a> and others to use their content to train AI models, writing checks ranging from $5 million to $250 million. Perplexity\u2019s revenue-sharing program, however, is different: instead of writing publishers large checks, Perplexity plans to share revenue each time the search engine uses their content in one of its AI-generated answers. The search engine has a \u201cRelated\u201d section at the bottom of each answer that currently shows follow-up questions that users can ask the engine. When the program rolls out, Perplexity plans to let brands pay to show specific follow-up questions in this section. Instead, it lets users choose from leading AI models like OpenAI\u2019s <a data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/openai-claims-that-its-free-gpt-4o-model-can-talk-laugh-sing-and-see-like-a-human-184249780.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:GPT-4o;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">GPT-4o<\/a>, Anthropic\u2019s <a data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/anthropics-newest-claude-chatbot-beats-openais-gpt-4o-in-some-benchmarks-170135962.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Claude 3.5 Sonnet;cpos:13;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Claude 3.5 Sonnet<\/a> and Meta\u2019s <a data-i13n=\"cpos:14;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/llama-31-is-metas-latest-salvo-in-the-battle-for-ai-dominance-150042924.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Llama 3.1;cpos:14;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Llama 3.1<\/a> to summarize answers from the web. \u201cIt\u2019s very simple,\u201d Shelevenko said, \u201cif we\u2019re making money and a publisher\u2019s content was used on that ad impression, the publisher will get a cut of that revenue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But without knowing how much percentage of ad revenue Perplexity plans to split with publishers, it\u2019s unclear whether the move will help publishers make up for any revenue lost due to declining traffic as AI-generated search engines and chatbots become more popular.
