SK hynix has announced that it will begin mass production of GDDR7 modules in the third quarter of this year (July-September). The new modules offer faster bandwidth and improved power efficiency.<\/p>\n

GDDR7 can deliver 32Gbps per pin and SK hynix says that this can reach 40Gbps \u201cdepending on the circumstances\u201d. When used on high-end GPUs with 384-bit memory buses, the new memory modules will be able to transfer 1.5TB per second (compared to 1.1TB per second for the previous generation).<\/p>\n

Additionally, SK hynix managed to improve the power efficiency by \u201cmore than 50%\u201d compared to the previous generation, thanks to improved packaging technology. It increased the number of heat-dissipating layers from four to six, which led to 74% lower thermal resistance (all while maintaining the same physical dimensions).<\/p>\n

The \u201cG\u201d in \u201cGDDR\u201d stands for \u201cGraphics\u201d, but the company expects that its modules will see use in other fields too. Sangkwon Lee, Head of DRAM Product Planning & Enablement at SK hynix, said that \u201cGDDR7 is expected to be adopted by a wider range of applications such as high-specification 3D graphics, AI, high-performance computing and autonomous driving.\u201d<\/p>\n
