Maggie Steffens<\/strong><\/a> and her family experienced a heartbreaking loss before the start of the Olympic Games in Paris.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, July 23, Lulu Conner<\/strong>\u2014the Olympic U.S. Water Polo team captain\u2019s sister-in-law\u2014died at 26 after traveling to the city to support Steffens as she competes for a fourth consecutive gold medal with the U.S. team.<\/p>\n

According to the Associated Press<\/em><\/a>, Maggie\u2014who married Lulu\u2019s brother Bobby Conner<\/strong> in November\u2014shared that she and her family are still determining exactly what happened, but described the situation as \u201ca medical emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was so excited for the Olympic Games,\u201d a teary Steffens told the outlet. \u201cWe\u2019re really close. She\u2019s the light of the world. She just brings so much joy to everyone. She always brings people together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lulu Conner was an artist\u2014she made her own version of Flavor Flav<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s USA Water Polo clock for the Olympics\u2014a UC Davis grad, and one of three siblings.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt definitely helps to play,\u201d Steffens said. \u201cI\u2019m like so out of body in a way right now. And I just keep trying to remind myself what Lulu would want and how she would be. How can I embody her spirit the best? Lulu was somebody who gave 150% to everything she did.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old scored two goals while playing 21 1\/2 minutes as the U.S. beat Greece 15-6 on the first day of the women\u2019s tournament on Saturday. She is the highest-scoring woman in Olympic history with 58 goals.<\/p>\n

In a sweet tribute to Lulu, Maggie dropped a bouquet of flowers into the River Seine from Team USA\u2019s boat during the July 26 Opening Ceremony.<\/p>\n

But as Maggie continues in her 2024 Olympic journey, she has a huge support system behind her\u2014including head coach Adam Krikorian<\/strong>, whose own brother died shortly before the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just show her love and support,\u201d Adam explained to the Associated Press. \u201cYou know it\u2019s important that she\u2019s there for Bobby and his family as well. This is a difficult time for them, and give her some freedom to be able to spend some time with them I think is enormously important.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a really hard couple of weeks for all of us,\u201d Maggie admitted. \u201cMy team has been a really big support system for me. I\u2019ve been obviously really struggling, and my husband as well, and his entire family. It\u2019s a nightmare, and it\u2019s completely shocking.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cBut I think just feeling her spirit here\u2014it\u2019s amazing. And I hope that we can make her proud every single day.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
