{"id":247706,"date":"2024-07-25T18:14:26","date_gmt":"2024-07-25T18:14:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/25\/chipotle-ceo-says-generous-portions-will-become-standard\/"},"modified":"2025-06-25T17:13:57","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T17:13:57","slug":"chipotle-ceo-says-generous-portions-will-become-standard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michigandigitalnews.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/25\/chipotle-ceo-says-generous-portions-will-become-standard\/","title":{"rendered":"Chipotle CEO says &#8216;generous portions&#8217; will become standard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Chipotle\u2019s CEO said the chain is making \u201cgenerous portions\u201d the standard after a wave of social-media criticism targeted its supposedly small portion sizes.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The company\u2019s CEO Brian Niccol said during Wednesday\u2019s second-quarter earnings call that about 10% of Chipotle\u2019s 3,500 restaurants are outliers in terms of portion sizes, according to customer surveys, and the chain is on a mission to make bigger portions uniform across all locations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/chipotle-mexican-grill\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/chipotle-mexican-grill\/\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\" rel=\"noopener\">Chipotle<\/a> execs have previously denied that anything had changed with its portions, and Chipotle founder and former CEO Steve Ells <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/former-chipotle-ceo-portion-sizes-consumers-retail-1851561851\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/qz.com\/former-chipotle-ceo-portion-sizes-consumers-retail-1851561851\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">said<\/a> last month the restaurant is \u201cquite generous\u201d with its portions. Still, the backlash has now spurred the chain to make changes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was never a directive to provide less to our customers,\u201d Niccol said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>To fix the uneven portions, Chipotle is taking a closer look at the outlier restaurants and doubling down on training and coaching in part to reemphasize larger portion sizes, Niccol said. That means every customer should get two substantial scoops of rice and four ounces of meat, Chipotle chief financial officer Jack Hartung <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-07-24\/chipotle-sales-beat-market-expectations-on-robust-diner-traffic?sref=2jPYL79S\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-07-24\/chipotle-sales-beat-market-expectations-on-robust-diner-traffic?sref=2jPYL79S\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">told <em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the new focus on portions will also come at a cost for the chain, Hartung said. Meeting the new standard could cost the company $50 million, he added. But for Niccol, the efforts are well worth it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenerous portion is a core brand equity of Chipotle. It always has been, and it always will be,\u201d Niccol said on Wednesday\u2019s earnings call.<\/p>\n<p>Chipotle\u2019s portion plan comes after a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/wells-fargo\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/wells-fargo\/\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\" rel=\"noopener\">Wells Fargo<\/a> analyst last month revealed <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/28\/chipotle-bowl-size-consistency-wells-fargo-study\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/28\/chipotle-bowl-size-consistency-wells-fargo-study\/\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\" rel=\"noopener\">a large disparity<\/a> in the weights of burrito bowls in New York City. To \u201cput the \u2018weight debate\u2019 to rest,\u201d the analyst, Zachary Fadem, ordered 75 burrito bowls at eight different locations and found the heaviest bowl weighed 47% more than the lightest for in-person orders. For online orders, the heaviest bowl was 87% heavier than the lightest, according to Fadem\u2019s report.
