The staff of more than 500 workers voted to unionize the Blizzard Entertainment studio with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) creating the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WoWGG_CWA\/status\/1816194652539871269\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:World of Warcraft Gamemakers Guild;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">World of Warcraft Gamemakers Guild<\/a>, according to an X post from the union\u2019s official account.<\/p>\n<p>The Blizzard studio is the latest major game studio to form a union during uncertain times of layoffs and studio closures across the gaming industry. Bethesda Game Studios, the studio behind the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/fallouts-16-emmy-nominations-show-that-successful-gaming-adaptations-are-no-longer-a-fluke-175555108.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Fallout;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Fallout<\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/the-elder-scrolls-vi-is-likely-five-plus-years-away-says-xbox-chief-220526727.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Elder Scrolls;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Elder Scrolls<\/a> franchises, formed its union with the help of CWA last weekend that includes 241 workers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019ve accomplished at World of Warcraft is just the beginning,\u201d said Eric Lanham, a test analyst and Wow Gamemakers Guild member, in a statement released by the CWA. \u201cMy colleagues and I are embarking on a quest to secure better pay, benefits, and job security through a strong union contract. For Azeroth! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ieewW5KFuI\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:pic.twitter.com\/ieewW5KFuI;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">pic.twitter.com\/ieewW5KFuI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 WoW Gamemaker&#8217;s Guild (@WoWGG_CWA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WoWGG_CWA\/status\/1816194652539871269?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:July 24, 2024;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">July 24, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>The World of Warcraft Gamemakers Guild is the largest wall-to-wall union currently under Microsoft\u2019s umbrella. <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/activisions-union-with-600-members-is-now-the-biggest-one-in-video-games-143000869.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Activision;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Activision<\/a> unionized around 600 QA workers with the CWA in March. <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/microsoft-union-zenimax-vote-recognize-190529301.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:ZeniMax Studios;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">ZeniMax Studios<\/a> also voted to unionize around 300 staffers back in January.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft also made an agreement with <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/microsoft-activision-blizzard-unionization-agreement-cwa-163550095.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Activision Blizzard;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Activision Blizzard<\/a> two years ago to respect the right of its workers to form a union. The agreement was part of Microsoft\u2019s deal to takeover Activision Blizzard.<\/p>\n<p>The CWA cites the start of the WoW Gamemakers Guild formation to a protest conducted by Activision Blizzard workers in 2021. The crew staged <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video-games\/2021\/07\/27\/blizzard-employees-walkout\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a walkout;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a walkout<\/a> at its Irvine, California headquarters <a data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/activision-blizzard-will-pay-54-million-to-settle-californias-gender-discrimination-lawsuit-101149166.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:over a lawsuit;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">over a lawsuit<\/a> filed by the state\u2019s Civil Rights Department (CRD) alleging the company was a \u201cbreeding ground for harassment and discrimination against women.\u201d The CRD later withdrew all allegations of systemic sexual harassment, and Activision Blizzard reached a settlement of $54.8 million relating to pay and promotion disparities.
