It\u2019s hard to believe it\u2019s been more than a decade since the British boy band One Direction<\/a> <\/strong>was formed on The X Factor.\u00a0<\/em>July 23 marks the 14th anniversary of the band<\/a> \u2014 Harry Styles<\/a>,\u00a0Liam Payne<\/a>,\u00a0Louis Tomlinson<\/a>,\u00a0Niall Horan<\/a><\/strong>, and former member\u00a0Zayn Malik<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 being placed together by Simon Cowell<\/strong><\/a>. Their rise to fame was meteoric<\/a> as they quickly transcended their reality TV fame and emerged as serious, chart-topping pop stars shortly after the show. They also proved that you don\u2019t have to win to make it big, as the five lads came in third behind runner up Rebecca Ferguson<\/strong> and winner Matt Cardie<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The early 2010s were a non-stop force of One Direction mania as the boys released several smash hits and albums while touring worldwide to millions of screaming fans. Things took a massive turn, however, in 2015 when Zayn decided to leave the group and pursue his own solo opportunities. Despite finishing their tour as a foursome, the boys went on an indefinite hiatus shortly after Zayn\u2019s departure.<\/p>\n

Harry\u2019s solo career has taken off in the years since One Direction parted ways, but it seems nobody could have predicted just how quickly his star would rise. Not only did his eponymous debut album and 2019 follow up Fine Line\u00a0<\/em>top charts around the world, but he\u2019s made a name for himself as a fashion icon, and a social commentator.\u00a0Harry has even branched out into acting, and was seen filming\u00a0<\/a>Don\u2019t Worry Darling<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>directed by his then-girlfriend Olivia Wilde<\/strong><\/a>. The couple appeared to make their relationship public after putting on a sweet display of PDA at a wedding<\/a> for Harry\u2019s agent in Montecito, California, on January 3, 2021. Harry \u2014 who officiated the wedding \u2014 looked very handsome in a black suit with a velvet bow. In the months since, the couple haven\u2019t been shy about packing on the PDA while enjoying date nights, and cruising around on boats. They eventually split by November 2022.<\/p>\n

Liam Payne<\/strong><\/a> has continued to release music over the years, but also made headlines for his personal life. He\u00a0welcomed a son named\u00a0Bear\u00a0<\/strong>with fellow singer\u00a0Cheryl Cole<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in 2017. The toddler, who has been kept out of the public eye since his birth, recently celebrated his fourth birthday! In\u00a0announcing his birth, Liam wrote on Instagram, \u201cI\u2019m incredibly lucky to welcome our new baby boy into the world. It\u2019s a moment that I will never forget for the rest of my life and my favorite memory I have so far.\u201d He later found love<\/a> with girlfriend Maya Henry\u00a0<\/strong>but their engagement came to an end<\/a> in 2021. Liam\u00a0opened up about some of the darker moments in his life during an interview on Steven Bartlett\u2019<\/strong>s\u00a0The Diary of a CEO<\/em> podcast. During the exchange, Liam recalled a photo of himself partying on a boat, referring to that moment as his \u201cpills and booze phase\u201d amid the height of One Direction\u2019s fame. He also\u00a0shared, \u201cI\u2019ve just not been very good at relationships. I know what my pattern is with relationships at this point. I\u2019m just not very good at them. I need to work on myself first before I put myself onto somebody else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Niall has also made\u00a0an impact in the music industry<\/a>. The Irish crooner has embraced his Ed Sheeran<\/strong> side on tracks like \u201cSlow Hands\u201d and \u201cThis Town\u201d and made his solo Saturday Night Live<\/em> debut in 2019. In the years since the group disbanded, Niall has offered some insight into the One Direction experience. He reflected on that period of his life during the March 23 episode of\u00a0People, Just People<\/a><\/em>\u00a0with host\u00a0Dermot O\u2019Leary<\/strong>, comparing the experience to being \u201ca prisoner\u201d. \u201cI struggled with the idea of, \u2018Why won\u2019t you just let us out?\u2019\u201d he explained, noting that fans would be \u201cbanging on car windows [before we could get out of the vehicle]. [I was thinking], \u2018We just want to go for a walk,\u2019 you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

Louis not only continued releasing solo music and collaborations with other artists, but he also returned as a judge to where it all began:\u00a0The X Factor. <\/em>He was also\u00a0the first of the One Direction boys to become a father. The singer welcomed an adorable son\u00a0Freddie Reign Tomlinson<\/strong><\/a>, with former girlfriend\u00a0Briana Jungwirth<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0in 2016. Louis\u2019 mini-me celebrated his\u00a0fifth birthday<\/a>\u00a0in January 2021, and he\u2019s the\u00a0spitting image of his dad<\/a>.\u00a0The former couple are very protective of their son and\u00a0rarely share photos<\/a> of him publicly. Louis opened up about fatherhood in a rare interview with\u00a0Metro<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in 2019. He explained that Freddie and Briana live in Los Angeles, and Louis splits his time between there and the UK. \u201cI try and spend as much time in England as I do LA and vice versa\u2026 to be\u00a0there to see\u00a0and go out with Freddie and all of that,\u201d he told the outlet. \u201cThen I have my\u00a0family in the UK<\/a>, who I make sure I see plenty of. It\u2019s a bit of a juggle at times but it\u2019s all part of life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zayn Malik was the first to depart the band in 2015, and achieved his own success with the song and music video for \u201cPillowtalk\u201d, which starred his former girlfriend<\/a> Gigi Hadid<\/strong>. Speaking of the international supermodel, the \u201cVibez\u201d singer welcomed a daughter<\/a>\u00a0named\u00a0Khai<\/strong><\/a> with Gigi in September 2020. He opened up about fatherhood during a rare interview<\/a>. \u201cHonestly, it\u2019s amazing,\u201d he gushed. \u201cA lot of people that I was speaking to, obviously, before she was born and stuff were like, \u2018It\u2019s a big adjustment, and it\u2019s going to be a massive change and stuff.\u2019 But honestly, she\u2019s an amazing baby.\u201d He added, \u201cIt\u2019s been really easy for me and Gig to kind of just ease into it. She kind of made it easy for us, she sleeps really well, she loves her milk.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
