(Photo by Naomi Baker\/Getty Images)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/GettyImages-1717295067_c963e8-e1721413181300.jpg?quality=100&amp;w=384&amp;h=216&amp;crop=1 384w, https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/GettyImages-1717295067_c963e8-e1721413181300.jpg?quality=100&amp;w=768&amp;h=432&amp;crop=1 768w, https:\/\/hollywoodlife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/GettyImages-1717295067_c963e8-e1721413181300.jpg?quality=100&amp;w=1536&amp;h=864&amp;crop=1 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 670px\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><figcaption id=\"lead-image-credit\">Image Credit: Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><!-- .entry-media --><\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-2\">A Japanese Olympic gymnast has\u00a0been sent home after she admitted to underage smoking and drinking.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-3\">According to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/olympics\/2024\/07\/19\/miyata-smoking-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\"><i>\u00a0The Japan Times<\/i><\/a>,\u00a0<strong>Shoko Miyata<\/strong> had to withdraw from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/tag\/olympics\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\">2024 Summer Olympics<\/a> after revealing she had smoked cigarettes in her private time and consumed alcohol at the National Training Center in Tokyo which violates the team\u2019s code of conduct.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-4\">The 19-year-old captain of the county\u2019s women\u2019s artistic gymnastics team was sent back to Japan on Thursday, July 18, just 10 days before the global competition, the Japanese\u00a0Gymnastics Association (JGA) said on Friday, July 19, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/gymnastics\/articles\/c4ngvw455kro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\">BBC News\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/article\/2024\/jul\/18\/japanese-gymnastics-star-shoko-miyata-reportedly-sent-home-from-olympics-for-smoking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"4\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\"><em>The Guardian<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-5\">\u201cWe apologise from the bottom of our hearts for this,\u201d JGA\u2019s president <strong>Tadashi Fujita<\/strong> said in a hastily arranged news conference on Friday.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-6\"><strong>Coach Harada<\/strong> said that while Miyata\u2019s conduct had been reckless, she had been under extreme pressure to perform at the highest level. \u201cShe was spending her days really burdened with so much pressure,\u201d he said, wiping away tears. \u201cI would implore people to understand that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-7\">Shoko had proven her talent in the sport, winning bronze in the balance beam event at the 2022 World Championships and gold at the All Japan Championship this April. Miyata is the reigning Japanese national champion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"group\/conversation-turn relative flex w-full min-w-0 flex-col agent-turn\">\n<div class=\"flex-col gap-1 md:gap-3\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-grow flex-col max-w-full\">\n<div class=\"min-h-[20px] text-message flex w-full flex-col items-end gap-2 whitespace-pre-wrap break-words [.text-message+&amp;]:mt-5 overflow-x-auto\" dir=\"auto\" data-message-author-role=\"assistant\" data-message-id=\"505a51ac-84a1-483e-a71f-d1aed90650e1\">\n<div class=\"flex w-full flex-col gap-1 empty:hidden first:pt-[3px]\">\n<div class=\"markdown prose w-full break-words dark:prose-invert light\">\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-8\">In reaction to the decision, some observers said that having Miyata leave the team appeared to be overly harsh.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-9\"><strong>Dai Tamesue<\/strong>, a 400-meter hurdler in three Olympic Games from 2000, posted on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/daijapan\/status\/1814081841525375200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-analytics-trigger=\"article-body-link\">X<\/a> before the news conference that, although Miyata\u2019s actions were problematic, she shouldn\u2019t be removed from the squad.<\/p>\n<p id=\"content-paragraph-10\"><strong>Aiko Sugihara<\/strong>, who is listed as a reserve for the women\u2019s team, had been considered as a potential replacement for Miyata at the Games. However, the JGA decided not to make the move at this time, as substitutes are intended to replace athletes who fall ill or get injured.
