It is set to pave the way to fusion power, akin to that which fuels the sun.<\/p>\n<p>Work started on the world\u2019s biggest fusion experiment in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/video\/2396239-future-of-fusion-how-the-uks-jet-reactor-paved-the-way-for-iter\/\">2006 through an international effort<\/a>, including the European Union, the US, China and Russia. The first run of the reactor, during which it will create superhot matter known as plasma \u2013 a state necessary for nuclear fusion to occur \u2013 was scheduled for 2020. Pictured above is a shot of one of the toroidal coils that produce these fields.<\/p>\n<p>The below images show some of the nine sectors that make up the ITER vacuum vessel.
