JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has a surprising message for disgruntled clients: keep the complaints coming.<\/p>\n
The Wall Street Titan recently said that he welcomes criticisms because they help open his eyes and ears to what thousands of his other customers are probably experiencing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI always tell a client, \u2018When you complain to us, you\u2019re doing us a favor. If we\u2019re torturing you, we\u2019re probably torturing another 10,000 or 100,000 people,\u2019\u201d Dimon revealed in LinkedIn\u2019s \u201cThis is Working<\/em><\/a>\u201d video series last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n It\u2019s why, he insisted, that leaders can\u2019t do their job from their corner office.<\/p>\n \u201cLeaders have to get out,\u201d he added. \u201cThey have to get out all the time. They have to be curious, ask a million questions.\u201d<\/p>\n Dimon offers no sympathy for leaders who claim to be too in demand to leave their desks: \u201cAny business leader who can\u2019t get out [because] they\u2019re too busy, they\u2019re making a huge mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n Having led JPMorgan since 2006, Dimon is acutely aware of how customers\u2019 needs and wants change over time\u2014and that leaders who don\u2019t remain on the pulse of what that means for their business get left behind.\u00a0<\/p>\n Just look at Blockbuster\u2019s ex-CEO, who\u2019s still plagued as \u201cthe guy that failed to keep up with technology<\/a>\u201d after passing up the opportunity to acquire Netflix<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s amazing how many times I see people don\u2019t have realistic assessments going on,\u201d Dimon said.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you don\u2019t have an accurate assessment of the real world out there, what\u2019s changing, what they\u2019re doing, you know, what the ideas are, you will eventually fail.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n The chief of America\u2019s biggest bank added that bureaucracy can get in the way of moving fast and breaking things like a Silicon Valley startup.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve always thought bureaucracy leads to politics, leads to stasis, leads to death,\u201d the 68-year-old warned. \u201cThe antidote to that is that you\u2019re open-minded to everything. Always learning, always curious.\u201d<\/p>\n Dimon\u2019s antidote to stagnating is a leaf out of Jeff Bezos\u2019 book\u2014the Amazon<\/a> founder famously penned 16 leadership principles<\/a> for the tech giant\u2019s employees to follow, one of them being \u201cLearn and Be Curious\u201d.<\/p>\n Even the company\u2019s current CEO, Andy Jassy, agrees that being eager to learn is what has separated those around him who have \u201cgrown their careers substantially versus those that stayed stagnant.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou have to be ravenous and hungry to find ways to learn,\u201d the 56-year-old Amazon veteran recently said in a company YouTube video.<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cThe second you think there\u2019s little left for you to learn is the second that you are unwinding as an individual and as a learning professional.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Barack Obama\u2019s former speechwriter, Aneesh Raman, echoed that ambitious workers should forgo titles completely to focus on skills development\u2014until they reach 35 years old<\/a>, at least.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThis is the time to find out what you\u2019re excited about, what you\u2019re good at, and what you want to get better at,\u201d Raman said.<\/p>\n Even outside of the corporate world, 20-time Grand Slam winner\u00a0Roger Federer credited his success<\/a>\u00a0to constantly improving his technique, studying his opponents, and learning new ways to beat them.<\/p>\n \u201cI didn\u2019t get where I got on pure talent alone. I got there by trying to outwork my opponents,\u201d he added. \u201cMost of the time, it\u2019s not about having a gift. It\u2019s about having grit.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\nChange with the world or stagnate<\/h2>\n
