Meta is letting a group of researchers examine some of Instagram\u2019s data to determine if social media is psychologically damaging younger users.<\/p>\n<p><a data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/7\/17\/24200579\/meta-instagram-researchers-study-teen-mental-health?utm_source=flipboard&amp;utm_content=topic%2Ftechnology\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Verge;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><em><\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>reported that the Center for Open Science (COS) is launching a new joint pilot program with Meta to produce independent studies about how social media affects teenagers\u2019 mental health.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cos.io\/meta\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Instagram Data Access Pilot for Well-Being Research;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> program will conduct \u201cindependent academic\u201d research using up to six months of Instagram data to determine the \u201cpotential positive or negative associations of Instagram use\u201d among teens and young adults. The study will also examine the positive and negative differences of large populations across the world and the causes of \u201cstatistical relationships between Instagram and social or emotional health,\u201d according to the program\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>The data researchers can access may include an Instagram user\u2019s followers and the accounts they follow, account settings and the amount of time they spend on the photo sharing service. The researchers will not have access to users\u2019 demographic information or the contents of their posts and comments. The data will come from accounts based in 24 countries including the US and UK, according to the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/community.hubspot.com\/t5\/Social-Tools\/Social-Chrome-Extension-Issue\/m-p\/959296\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:request for proposal (RFP);cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other scientific studies conducted by researchers from the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/mitsloan.mit.edu\/ideas-made-to-matter\/study-social-media-use-linked-to-decline-mental-health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT);cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> and <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019-01-31-study-says-quitting-facebook-improves-happiness.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:New York University and Stanford;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> have found parallel links between social media use and the state of a person\u2019s mental health. The link earned greater awareness last year when <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/meta-whistleblower-tells-senate-the-company-cannot-be-trusted-with-our-children-185616936.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Arturo B\u00e9jar;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a>, a former director of engineering for Protect and Care at Facebook, testified before a Senate Judiciary subcommittee that he alerted the company and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg by email of the dangers their product could have on young people.<\/p>\n<p>B\u00e9jar testified that seven days before the hearing, 13 percent of users on Instagram between the ages of 13-15 receive unwanted sexual advances. He also testified that his own 16-year-old daughter exhibited signs of a momentary decline in mental health when a user commented that she should \u201cget back to the kitchen\u201d under one of her posts.<\/p>\n<p>A month before the hearing, <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/forty-one-states-sue-meta-for-harming-the-mental-health-of-its-youngest-users-162521184.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:41 states filed a lawsuit;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><\/a> against Meta for allegedly misleading the public about the potentially addictive nature of its platforms like Facebook and Instagram among teenagers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My experience, after sending that email and seeing what happened afterwards, is that they knew there were things they could do about it, they chose not to do them and we cannot trust them with our children,&#8221; B\u00e9jar said during the hearing. &#8220;It&#8217;s time for Congress to act.
