President\u00a0Joe Biden<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0said in an interview airing Wednesday that he might reconsider his decision to stay in the race against\u00a0Donald Trump<\/strong><\/a> if a medical condition emerged and was diagnosed by doctors \u2014 giving the clearest indication yet that he may be faltering in his vow to seek a second term.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs there anything that you would look to you, personally\u2026 to say, \u2018If I see that, I will reevaluate?\u2019\u201d BET host Ed Gordon<\/strong> asked the 81-year-old in an interview conducted Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I had some medical condition that emerged, if somebody, if doctors came to me and said, \u2018You got this problem, that problem,\u2019\u201d Biden said in an excerpt released Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Mr. Biden has said repeatedly that none of his doctors have told him he has a serious medical condition. Dr. Kevin O\u2019Connor<\/strong>, the White House physician, wrote\u00a0after the president\u2019s physical\u00a0in February that Mr. Biden is \u201ca healthy, active, robust, 81-year-old male who remains fit to successfully execute the duties of the presidency.\u201d<\/p>\n

But his disastrous performance at a\u00a0debate with Trump last month, which prompted a wave of calls by even Democratic allies to step aside, raised questions about his health and acuity.<\/p>\n

The comment is the latest in a series of shifting explanations by the president about what might cause him to reconsider. In an\u00a0interview with ABC News\u00a0this month, Mr. Biden said he would drop out only if the \u201cLord almighty\u201d told him to. At a news conference in Washington several days later, he said he would stay in the race unless aides came to him with proof that he could never win.<\/p>\n

In the same interview, Biden said that he feels the need to run again \u2014 rather than serve as a \u201ctransitional\u201d leader, as he said in 2020 \u2014 because\u00a0the country is \u201cso divided.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI said I was going to be a transitional candidate, and I thought I would be able to move on from this and pass it on to somebody else,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I didn\u2019t anticipate things getting so, so, so divided. And quite frankly, I think the only thing age brings is a little bit of wisdom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I\u2019ve demonstrated that I know how to get things done for the country in spite of the fact that we were told we couldn\u2019t get it done,\u201d Biden continued. \u201cBut there\u2019s more to do, and I\u2019m reluctant to walk away from that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
