Tourism\u2019s environmental footprint is a complaint usually levied at giant carbon-emitting cruise ships.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Barcelona, a popular setting-off point for cruise liners, locals have taken to <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/07\/09\/barcelona-residents-fed-up-with-tourism-squirting-visitors-with-water-guns\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/07\/09\/barcelona-residents-fed-up-with-tourism-squirting-visitors-with-water-guns\/\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\" rel=\"noopener\">squirting tourists with water pistols<\/a>. Protestors in the Spanish Canary Islands started a hunger strike in April to protest overcrowding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last October, cruise passengers were greeted by protesters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2023\/10\/09\/shame-on-you-cruise-ship-passengers-greeted-by-protesters-dressed-as-polar-bears-in-france\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2023\/10\/09\/shame-on-you-cruise-ship-passengers-greeted-by-protesters-dressed-as-polar-bears-in-france\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">dressed as polar bears and sea lions<\/a> as they disembarked at the French port of Brittany, in a nod to the industry\u2019s penchant for pollution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A study from the campaign group Transport &amp; Environment found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportenvironment.org\/articles\/europes-luxury-cruise-ships-emit-as-much-toxic-sulphur-as-1bn-cars-study\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.transportenvironment.org\/articles\/europes-luxury-cruise-ships-emit-as-much-toxic-sulphur-as-1bn-cars-study\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">Europe\u2019s luxury cruise ships<\/a> emitted as much toxic sulphur as 1 billion cars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A rising tide<\/h2>\n<p>As protests have become increasingly hostile, the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has suggested that it may have to divert ships to protect passengers from violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be some consideration of adapting the itineraries if for some reason we feel that all passengers will not be well-treated,\u201d Marie-Caroline Laurent, European director of the CLIA, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/global-cruise-industry-sees-growing-demand-wary-port-protests-2024-07-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/global-cruise-industry-sees-growing-demand-wary-port-protests-2024-07-16\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">told <em>Reuters<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Laurent didn\u2019t specify which cities were liable to be axed from itineraries, but it\u2019s easy to join the dots after a wave of protests across the continent in recent months.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The mayor of Barcelona, <a href=\"https:\/\/cruising.org\/-\/media\/clia-media\/research\/2023\/2023-clia-state-of-the-cruise-industry-report_low-res.ashx\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/cruising.org\/-\/media\/clia-media\/research\/2023\/2023-clia-state-of-the-cruise-industry-report_low-res.ashx\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">Europe\u2019s most popular<\/a> port for cruise ships, said the city couldn\u2019t take more passengers than the 3.5 million it accepted in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The CLIA defended its presence in Barcelona, saying only 4% of the city\u2019s visitors were cruise passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Venice, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-56592109\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-56592109\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">banned cruise ships<\/a> from the center in 2021, introduced a so-called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/05\/23\/venice-tourist-tax-miserable-failure-daytrippers\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/05\/23\/venice-tourist-tax-miserable-failure-daytrippers\/\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\" rel=\"noopener\">tourist tax<\/a>\u201d to deter or make extra money from day-trippers to the city this summer, months after moving to limit the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/01\/03\/venice-tourist-group-limit\/?queryly=related_article\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/01\/03\/venice-tourist-group-limit\/?queryly=related_article\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\" rel=\"noopener\">size of groups<\/a> that could congregate in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Amsterdam, meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/07\/04\/amsterdam-nuisance-tourists-stay-away-banned-new-hotels-cruise-ships\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/europe\/2024\/07\/04\/amsterdam-nuisance-tourists-stay-away-banned-new-hotels-cruise-ships\/\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\" rel=\"noopener\">plans to nearly halve<\/a> the number of cruises that can stop in its port every year by 2026 and ban them altogether by 2035.<\/p>\n<p>And in Greece, locals have taken to using drones to police new rules on sun loungers in a bid to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2024\/07\/15\/greek-beaches-plagued-with-overcrowding-are-facing-a-sunbed-crackdown-enforced-by-drones\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2024\/07\/15\/greek-beaches-plagued-with-overcrowding-are-facing-a-sunbed-crackdown-enforced-by-drones\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\">stop overcrowding<\/a> on the country\u2019s beaches.<\/p>\n<p>Despite grumbling about a rising lack of hospitality, the global cruise industry is set to carry 10.7% more passengers in 2028 than in 2023, when 31.7 million tourists boarded the liners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-83cd12c6-0 dTdzGq article\" data-cy=\"subscriptionPlea\"><strong>Recommended Newsletter:<\/strong> The Fortune Next to Lead newsletter is a must-read for the next generation of C-suite leaders.
