Titled \u201cGoliath is winning in Capital Markets,\u201d the report obtained by <em>Fortune<\/em> shows how the best rolling four quarter capital market improvement in five years has supercharged big bank revenue from stocks, bonds and other long-term investments.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p>All five of the banks\u2014JP Morgan Chase &amp; Co., <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/citigroup\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/citigroup\/\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\" rel=\"noopener\">Citigroup<\/a>, Bank of America, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/goldman-sachs-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/goldman-sachs-group\/\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\" rel=\"noopener\">Goldman Sachs<\/a> and Morgan Stanley\u2014 exceeded Wells Fargo\u2019s conservative model last quarter, with capital markets revenue\u2014generated by charging a fee for providing liquidity to markets\u2014increasing 25% across the board after declining every year since 2020. Total capital markets revenue for all five banks was $128 billion last year, and is expected to hit $139.4 billion next year.<\/p>\n<p>The stocks from four of the banks are listed as overweight, meaning the analysts believe they will outperform the market: Goldman Sachs\u2019 current price is listed at $505.15, with a target of $550; JP Morgan\u2019s current price is $212.75, with a target of $225; Citigroup is listed at $67.36, targeting $85 and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/bank-of-america-corp\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/bank-of-america-corp\/\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\" rel=\"noopener\">Bank of America<\/a> is listed at $44.15, targeting $52. Only <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/morgan-stanley\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/morgan-stanley\/\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\" rel=\"noopener\">Morgan Stanley<\/a> is listed as equal weight, meaning the researchers expect it will match market movements, with a listed price of $107.81 targeting $99.00<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile global revenues have lagged trends at US banks, the trend appears to have reversed to the upside,\u201d wrote Wells Fargo Securities equity analysts Mike Mayo, Christopher Spahr and Robert Rutschow, in the report published today. \u201cBank managements gave positive commentary about the capital markets recovery being in early stages and highlighted significant dry powder still to be deployed by private capital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Based on the banks\u2019 quarterly <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/07\/15\/goldman-sachs-ceo-is-first-bank-leader-to-speak-publicly-on-trump-shooting-america-cannot-afford-division-and-distrust\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/07\/15\/goldman-sachs-ceo-is-first-bank-leader-to-speak-publicly-on-trump-shooting-america-cannot-afford-division-and-distrust\/\" class=\"sc-82aca549-0 klXAci\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> published over the past five days, Morgan Stanley\u2019s capital markets revenue was up 24% year over year, JP Morgan\u2019s was up 18%, Goldman Sachs was up 14%, Citigroup was up 13%, and Bank of America was up 11%.<\/p>\n<p>Revenue from the most recent four quarters which the banks have been required to publish is higher than any four quarters since the quarter ending 2022. Overall revenues were up 5% from the fourth quarter 2023 trough.
