Although we don\u2019t recommend installing it on your primary Mac, here\u2019s how to get the 2024 version of macOS up and running ahead of its official rollout in the fall.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"caas-jump-link-heading\" id=\"compatible-macs\">Compatible Macs<\/h2>\n<p>First, you\u2019ll need a recent Mac to run the Sequoia public beta. Apple\u2019s software supports the following models:<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll notice that list still includes (up to) the last few generations of Intel Macs, so Apple may still be several years away from requiring <a data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/the-mac-turns-40-how-apple-silicon-cured-its-midlife-crisis-161520642.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Apple Silicon;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Apple Silicon<\/a> for its latest software. Some apps and system features you rely on may be buggy or broken in the beta, and downgrading back to <a data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/macos-sonoma-review-widgets-gaming-141540494.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:macOS Sonoma;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">macOS Sonoma<\/a> (the current version) will wipe all your data. A Time Machine backup lets you restore your system to where it was before you began tinkering, so do that before going anywhere near Sequoia.<\/p>\n<p>To back up with Time Machine, plug an external disk into your Mac, navigate to <strong>System Settings &gt; Time Machine<\/strong>, add a backup disk and follow the instructions. It may take at least several hours, depending on how much data you\u2019re using (and whether you\u2019ve backed up recently). But it\u2019s worth it for peace of mind.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"caas-jump-link-heading\" id=\"how-to-install-the-macos-sequoia-beta\">How to install the macOS Sequoia beta<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve never registered your Apple account for the Apple Beta Software Program, you\u2019ll need to start by <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:12;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/beta.apple.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:heading to Apple\u2019s website;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:12;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">heading to Apple\u2019s website<\/a> in Safari, signing up, and agreeing to the terms.<\/p>\n<p>Afterward, head to <strong>System Settings &gt; General &gt; Software Update<\/strong>, and click \u201ci\u201d next to Beta Updates. In the pop-up window, choose \u201cOff,\u201d which brings up a menu. Choose macOS Sequoia Public Beta. This feature seems handy to check or reply to something while leaving your phone in your pocket or on a charger.<\/p>\n<p><a data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/apples-first-attempt-at-ai-is-apple-intelligence-181444846.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Apple Intelligence;cpos:13;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Apple Intelligence<\/a> won\u2019t be available in betas until the fall. But when it arrives, Macs with M-series chips will get system-wide AI writing tools, including rewriting, proofreading and summarizing text. It also <a data-i13n=\"cpos:14;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/chatgpt-is-baked-into-apple-intelligence-185026662.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:includes (opt-in) ChatGPT integration;cpos:14;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">includes (opt-in) ChatGPT integration<\/a> and a new tool called Image Playground that generates AI images in various styles.<\/p>\n<p>Siri in Sequoia also gets an AI-infused upgrade, which could help the feature fulfill its promise as a truly conversational assistant. (You may have noticed it currently falls well short of that.)
