In Elon Musk\u2019s worldview, San Francisco represents the leftist hive mind behind everything that is sinister, and Twitter<\/a> was its conduit. Yes, he actually said that.\u00a0<\/p>\n Now, the Texan \u00e9migr\u00e9 appears to have had enough of America\u2019s most liberal city and may be looking to move his social media company, now called X, to politically friendlier pastures like his adopted Lone Star State.<\/p>\n Real estate firm JLL told the\u00a0San Francisco Chronicle<\/a><\/em>\u00a0on Thursday that its services had been retained to find a new sublease tenant for the entire 800,000-square-foot complex at its 1355 Market Street headquarters and the adjacent 1 10th building.<\/p>\n Landlord Shorenstein Properties, which bought it in partnership with JPMorgan via their holding SRI Nine Market Square, had sued Musk early last year for being\u00a0delinquent<\/a>\u00a0on his\u00a0rent<\/a>. <\/p>\n In March, it\u00a0dropped<\/a>\u00a0the case without explanation.\u00a0<\/p>\n If Musk really is planning on relocating X, it wouldn\u2019t be out of character for the tycoon. <\/p>\n In 2021, he\u00a0moved<\/a>\u00a0Tesla\u2019s headquarters from California to Texas in res<\/span>ponse to policymakers\u2019 pandemic lockdowns and has\u00a0now\u00a0redomiciled<\/a>\u00a0the EV manufacturer there as well following his spat with a\u00a0Delaware judge<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n Unsurprisingly, when Musk first launched his Twitter bid over two years ago, Texas Governor Greg Abbott leaped at the chance to recommend shifting Twitter\u2019s headquarters to his state.<\/p>\n .@elonmusk<\/a>. Bring Twitter to Texas to join Tesla, SpaceX<\/a> & the Boring company.<\/p>\n \u2014 Greg Abbott (@GregAbbott_TX) April 25, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n Neither X Corp nor Shorenstein Properties had an immediate comment when reached by\u00a0Fortune<\/em>.<\/p>\n Spurred on by his\u00a0ex-wife<\/a>, Musk has claimed he bought the social media platform for $44 billion not only to\u00a0accelerate\u00a0<\/a>his plan to clone China\u2019s Everything app WeChat but also for the\u00a0good of humanity<\/a>.<\/span> <\/p>\n He believed the microblogging site, due to its location in the heart of a crime-infested Bay Area, helped spread a \u201ccorrosive<\/a>\u201d ideology that threatened western civilization.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cYou could literally film a Walking Dead episode unedited in downtown SF. This is where San Francisco politics leads and Twitter was exporting this self-destructive mind virus to the world,\u201d he\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0last April. <\/p>\n \u201cWith some exceptions, other tech companies are still doing so. Evil in the guise of good.\u201d<\/p>\n San Francisco, the city in California with the\u00a0greatest gap between rich and poor<\/a>, has struggled with homelessness, crime, and fentanyl use, particularly in the aftermath of the pandemic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n Combined with recent changes in statewide legislation raising the bar<\/a>\u00a0for prosecuting\u00a0shoplifting<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0rising minimum wages<\/a>, there is a constant flow of headlines from mainly small businesses leaving the greater Bay Area,<\/span> creating more and more vacancies in the commercial property market.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI know a lot of companies that are trying to get out of their leases\u201d, said Mayor London Breed\u00a0four years ago<\/a>. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of folks that are looking at this as an opportunity to walk away.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Musk and his cohort of close business associates, including\u00a0David Sacks<\/a>, have been vocal critics of the city\u2019s policymakers in recent years.\u00a0<\/p>\n Musk blames much of the city\u2019s woes on the\u00a0local mindset<\/a>\u00a0that he felt needed to be stopped before it could spread any further: \u201cFar left San Francisco\/Berkeley views have been propagated to the world via Twitter.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Should he sublease its office space in the tech hub, it would represent a clean break from its historical roots, almost as meaningful as when he ditched its name and rebranded it X this time\u00a0last year<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
